Hello everyone,
My oh so slow to understand 10 1/2 yo son is really having a hard time with the word problems in Singapore 3A and I honestly don't know how to coach him through it. He has always had difficulty understanding. But I'll spare you the details. The problems he's currently having trouble with require 2 steps - i.e, "Sakrit spent $240 on Monday, Seth spent $40 more than Sakrit on Tuesday. How much did they spend altogether?" Any advice on how to help him?
I would appreciate it!
With Joy!

Re: Singapore 3A word problems
Hi Julie,
Thanks for your reply. I'm just understanding more and more that we really have to play with manipulatives and talk it through A LOT for him to get the feel of it. The bar graphs aren't working for him, yet. But hopefully, as he gains confidence we'll be able to rely on those more. I've had him working in the Singapore 1A word problem book to boost confidence and today he said he thought he was ready for something more challenging.
Regarding - how's it going. It is going well. One of the many blessings of HOD is that you have a plan to keep you on track when you can't plan. Since we started HOD in January of this year we've moved 3 times, I started a part-time job and I'm now 20 weeks in to a pregnancy at the tender age of 44. I haven't been able to post much, because ....need I explain. But I've just recently started to tune back into the board and am looking forward to sharing in everyone's wisdom.
Wtih Joy!

Oh my, Florence! You have had a lot going on! Moving can be so stressful, as well as adding a part-time job - and expecting too?!?deltagal wrote:Hi Julie,
