DITHOR questions

Post by sted » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:06 am

Can I ask, is there a writing or activity element each day with DITHOR say in level 4/5 or are some days just reading? Do you do it every day? I'm trying to figure out how to schedule it with a 2/3 and 4/5 in Bigger.

Thanks,
Shannon

Good morning, Sheila! In Bigger, DITHOR is scheduled daily, and I think that would work well for both of your dc. By doing it with both of them 5 days a week, you'll be able to do the "All Levels Together" days with both of them, and they can also choose the "Group Project" at the end, working together for that too (of course, they can choose the individual projects too, if they would rather - but it is convenient to have them work together for that last week of each unit). The General Daily Format in the Introduction shows what they'll be doing:

As far as the writing, in 4/5 students write in their student books about 4 times a week. Here is the first week, so you can see the amount of writing:

We did DITHOR 5 days a week with Bigger Hearts. We went through all 9 genres that year, and we had a great year. I began by writing my ds's answers for his workbook on a marker board, so he could copy them in his Student Book (he got hung up on having his spelling right - which is a good thing really  ). Then, a few units in, I just wrote the words he asked me to on a marker board to help him with spelling, and he did the rest in his student book on his own. Last, he just wrote in his student book independently, and I had him look up how to spell things right within the book he'd read. This progression worked well for him, and he now has learned the skills to do his Student Book and edit it for proper spelling on his own for the most part. I do underline in pencil words he misspelled, and then he checks back in his book to erase them and fix them. HTH! DITHOR has helped my ds become a very strong reader, and he loves reading so much. I bet your dc are going to like DITHOR too! :D
