Preparing self study extensions?

Post by Mumkins » Tue Mar 15, 2011 3:05 pm

I'll have my son in 3rd grade who'll be 8 in Oct and my DD in 5th grade who will be 10 in Aug. So she'll be 10, which fits in the the regular self study set, yet she'll be 5th grade, which fits in for older students.

Which should I choose for her?

I highly suggest, and will be doing the same, using the ones scheduled in the guide. They really are great! I'll be letting DD10 in 5th grade read some of the older child self study books IN ADDITION TO the younger child self study pack scheduled in the guide. She really enjoys reading though, and the topics will be of great interest to her, so it's not really extra work-- it will be her fun, bedtime reading :) . I won't require ANY follow-up activities to the extensions.

My DD10 (who just turned 10 and will be starting 5th grade this coming fall) will be using the extension books as scheduled in the Appendix of Preparing. She will also likely read all her brother's Preparing independent history books, as she is an avid reader.

My DD is 10, 5th grade and is doing Preparing as written along with the extension readers because she is an avid reader. It has been a great year and not too much workload to do both.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

Thank you. I'm leaning towards not doing the extensions. I'll think about it a bit more.

I would say it depends on how strong of a reader she is. My DS was about that same age when we did Preparing. We did not do the extensions and I am glad we didn't. I wanted him to focus more on some of the skills such as written narration, oral narration etc and I felt like if I challenged him too much with the reading then he wouldn't do as well in the other areas.
