Questions about The Reading Lesson and Reading Made easy

Post by striving2Bprov31 » Mon Mar 07, 2011 10:44 am

Hello, all!

I was wondering if either of these recommended phonics programs used in Little Hearts starts phonics instruction from the very beginning. In other words, does the child absolutely have to know all of the letter sounds before he can begin either of these programs.....or is there one out of these two programs that is suitable if the child is not solid in all of the letter sounds??

I hope this question makes sense! :)

Thanks for the help and have a great Monday!

Liz,
:D Good Morning!

We are using The Reading Lesson with DD 4(nearly 5). Though she does know her letter sounds the program does not assume that the child does. Have you looked at the samples? They provide a very generous one on the website. In the very first lesson they teach the letter sounds for a few letters (the book is downstairs and so I'm not certain which ones :D ) and then practices with them. If your kiddo already knows the sounds the lessons will progress faster but it is not a pre-requisite. I highly recommend the cd that accompanies The Reading Lesson (if you use it) because it gives the child a lot of fun practice, including practicing those letter sounds. Hmmmm . . . I think the first letters learned are c,s,a,o,t.

I don't know what the pre-reqs are for Reading Made Easy although MOST phonics programs do not assume that a child knows letters or sounds. I use or have used Phonics Pathways and The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading and both programs BEGIN with letters and sounds. :D

We are using Reading Made Easy, and it does not assume that your child knows letter sounds before starting. HTH.

Reading Made Easy starts by teaching letter sounds. My dd already new them so we went through the first few lessons really quickly.
