bOOKS nOT tO mISS

Post by mrsrandolph » Sat Nov 27, 2010 12:29 am

Just wanted to list some of the read aloud my kids have enjoyed the most. I wouldn't want you to miss any of them. I have 2 boys & 2 girls, and they ALL love these on this list... Misty Of Chincoteague, Baby Island (my son LOVED Baby Island), The Matchlock Gun, The Whipping Boy, A Lion To Guard Us, A Cricket In Times Square,...to name a few

And even if you have passed the Guide where these particular titles are recommended, you can still use them!! :D

Glad you shared this. Misty of Chincoteague is coming up soon for us. Can't wait to read it!
We also loved Cricket in Times Square so much that we read the next book - Tucker's Countryside.
There is so much good reading to do with HOD!

So true, Shannon! :D Those books fit on our "not to miss" list too. :D Since some of them have sequels, we've enjoyed getting those as gifts for our dc when we've finished reading the ones in HOD. It helps me out with that never-ending search for good books for free reading! :D

Oh thanks for sharing! We let dd (7) pick the book for each genre coming up that she wants to read, and for this one she picked Snow Treasure. We start it Monday! I really wanted her to pick Baby Island, so maybe we'll add that at some point.

We've really loved Sword in the Tree, Key to the Treasure, and Phillis Wheatley: Young Revolutionary Poet. (I hope I have all the titles right. If not, someone please correct me.) I was really surprised how much everyone loved Phillis Wheatley. Even the 2 yo came running every time we sat down for storytime!

Let's see...is there a book we haven't enjoyed? Here's a few off the top of my head.

The Railway Children
Benjamin West and His Cat Grimlikin
Cricket in Times Square -- my daughter cried when we finished that book. She didn't want it to end.
Justin Morgan Had a Horse
Understood Betsey -- We never seem to get tired of this wonderful story
The Ordinary Princess
Toliver's Secret

Last year our favorite was Reddy Fox. Our favorite this year (so far!) is Charlotte's Web and Key to the Treasure. My son's favorite emerging reader was Wagon Wheels.
Thanks for the tips on Baby Island and Misty of Chincoteague. I was planning to save those for my daughter, but maybe not! Hmmmm, I think Cricket in Times Square will be up next for us ... :D

Mommamo - Snow Treasure is one of my absolute favs...so you're not going wrong there either. When I was in college (for el. ed.), our professor read that to us as a read-aloud at the beginning of Teaching Language Arts class. (I loved that we got read-alouds in college! ) I was on the edge of my seat! :D

I agree that HOD's book choices are GREAT! I've been using the read-aloud options for Beyond & Bigger to pick books for Grant to read in his free time since we missed most of those. Haven't found any that we don't like!

I KNOW! I love that HOD has taken the guesswork out of choosing great books that are not questionable! :D
