Using Singapore Standards Edition K and 1

Post by Blessed with seven » Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:27 pm

Hi,

I am assuming that it is perfectly ok to use the Standards Editions of Singapore for Little Hearts? I already own the K and 1A and I just wanted to make sure....

Thanks,

Kim

HOD uses the Primary Mathematics version of Singapore math, as shown at this link:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/singapore.php

The Standards version is different and won't match the HOD hands-on math plans nor the schedules of textbooks/workbooks in subsequent guides. The Primary Mathematics versions are what HOD has plans for progressing through all of the HOD guides. I do think it's important to have the right version, but the good news is the books are very inexpensive, so it wouldn't cost much to get the matching ones. HTH!

Hi there- Just want to clarify that the Standards and U.S. editions are both part of the Primary Mathematics series. The HOD schedule and hands-on activities are based on the U.S. ed. So if you use the Standards ed., while the content is very similar, it won't match up with the HOD schedule and acitivites. I would think you could still use the HOD activities, but you would need to figure out yourself which activities go with your lessson and you would need to schedule the lessons yourself. :)

Well..then...what to do? I bought the Standard Edition, homeschool guide, the whole bit already....I guess I didn't realize there were "activities" for math so I didn't worry about it too much..hmmm...

I will go through the guide and see if I can make it work, if not...I will just sell mine and get the other books. I am wanting to get started. Chomping at the bit, as we horse people way, well...I guess it isn't just horse people that say that

Okay, so you bought the Little Hearts guide and the Singapore Earlybird Kindergarten Standards edition books (A and B)? If it were me and assuming you are unable to return the Singapore books, I would just go ahead and do them. Mostly because I'm so frugal and the Standards edition is perfectly fine, IMO. :) You can just schedule the lessons out yourself and add in the activities in the LHFHG guide as you see fit. :) If that seems too complicated to you, then the U.S. edition books aren't that expensive like Julie said and you could just sell your Standards ed. Either way, it'll be just fine. :) Then next year when you start 1A/1B, you can switch to the U.S. edition if you want.

Hi Sara,

I will be using LHFHG and I bought the Standards K and Standards 1 for my 1st grader. Sooo...bummer! I guess I could "skip" the math section and use the suggestions that follow in the HS Guide (singapore). My older ones in Bigger are using completely different math programs so...I don't want to switch them, my daughter loves Teaching Textbooks and my son is doing Saxon sooo...I am just going to stick w/ those. I don't want to start skipping sections but trying Singapore is a bit of a leap for me anyway. I am going with it because as hard as it is for me to be "hands on", manipulative type, I believe it is important for the younger ones to have a program that isn't drill, drill, drill. I want them to enjoy and understand.

Oh, I see, you really did buy the whole bit, lol. I didn't realize you had also purchased 1A/1B and the Singapore homeschooling guides. :) It really is up to you, I think either way you will really enjoy Singapore. Maybe Carrie will chime in with her reasons for using the U.S. edition instead of the Standards and that will help you decide which edition you want to use... :)

One of the reasons I went ahead w/ the Standards is I "thought" they were phasing out the US Editions...I guess I misunderstood...YIKES! I know for K, you can't get Earlybird 1A, 1B etc..anymore, I don't think.

From what I understand, Singapore doesn't have any plans to phase out the U.S. edition, except for the K level, which is aleady out of print. You can still get the U.S. editions of the K level through HOD though. HTH!
