PHFHG Student checklist for written narration

Post by deltagal » Mon Oct 04, 2010 1:08 pm

Hi all,

I'm ready to implement one more NEW piece into our HOD puzzle. What is the best way to use the student (not the teacher's ) checklist? Do I make a copy for their binder and have them go over the list when they've finished their narration? Do they review the entire list or just to their point of mastery? Sounds like easy questions, but any thoughts would be appreciated...

Within the "Written Narrations Skills: Teacher's List" in the Appendix, there are some good guidelines that have helped me. I just focused on one skill at a time, and then after we'd worked through most of the skills together one at a time over several years, I gave him his own copy of the student's list to use. This took us from PHFHG to about the end of CTC. I wouldn't give a child the list at the start, as it's overwhelming and skills are meant to be taught and focused on one at a time, but by about the last unit of CTC, we found it was about the right time for him to have his own list to use before going through it with me. At that point, it helped him do some editing first on his own, and then finish it with me. :D I'm sure every child is different in when this would be the right time to do, but this is what worked for our ds. :D

Good thoughts here, Julie. You hit the nail on the head with my reluctance to hand the list over to my ds at this point - it would be too overwhelming. I've been working "MY" list, now I know when we can begin to use his. Thanks.
