Preparing question re copywork

Post by cirons » Sun Oct 03, 2010 7:14 pm

Hello again! As I am reading through my manual to see what I need to buy, I have a question.....what is the benefit of using unruled paper when doing some of the science (maybe bible too?) copywork?? I am happy to ask my daughter to do this if there is some benefit but I know it will be a lot messier than if I provided her with say a half/half page where she could write on lines and then draw above/beneath the writing....

Thanks...

You can if wish. I did this for the experiment day, because dd hasn't been able to fit it all on. But I think if they're finding a problem with forethought of making it all fit, it gives them an idea on how.

And incidentally, I need to do this for the verse/picture day in science as well as she is taking up half the page in writing. She gets a little unglued if she looks at a page and she feels there's not enough space to write, it's always, "well where am I going to write this?". Sort of funny, but an issue nonetheless. I'll probably just print out a few lines at the top, so she can get an idea the size of writing she should be using.

Good question - There are a few reasons this is a good idea. :D First, it helps with the transition from handwriting paper to wide-lined notebook paper. Having the dotted mid-line and larger spacing within the lines themselves is good for beginning writing, but eventually can slow dc down. Once dc know their letter formations and are writing fairly well, it can actually become a hindrance to continue to write on handwriting paper. :? Try it yourself and you will see - it takes a lot longer, and it can actually break the flow of thinking that writing in words and sentences takes to do well. Maybe you are talking about paper that is half wide-lined and half drawing space, however, and if so that would probably be fine, though your dd would be missing the benefit of the second reason this is a good idea, and that is it looks more like a notebooking page. :D This allows dc some creativity in how they space out their notebooking writing and drawing, and it results in a more "scrapbook-style" kind of entry. Putting together an overall layout for a notebooking entry is somewhat like making a mini-poster, and it is a higher level skill than always having the lines one place, and the spacing another. One thing you can do if you desire lines, but want the benefit of transitional writing and creative notebooking is have your dd use a ruler to draw lines to write on herself with a ruler (this would just be a "bottom" line to write on), and in this way she can place them as she sees fit and with the spacing she desires, while still following the guiding directions within the box. Only you can know where your dd is on this spectrum, but if she is in PHFHG, I'd say she's probably ready for this kind of less guided writing. HTH! :D

Thank you Julie! I assumed there must be a good reason for this as it seems there is very intentional learning behind everything in HOD which I love! I have never done notebooking before with the kids so thanks for the explanation....I understand now! Ta.

This was the most useless answer ever. I didn't have my coffee yet.
