question about ordering "Bigger"

Post by Blessed with seven » Sat Oct 02, 2010 9:25 pm

Well...thanks to everyone for helping decide on which program, I have decided to do Bigger w/ 2 of my children. In searching the sight I was wondering if there was a list of what all is needing in the first Units? I don't even like asking that but, I just added up everything I was "wanting" to get, I would have an emerging reader and one that would go into Drawn into the Heart of Reading, and there is no way I can get everything right now. Not even close. I am going to have to get the books as we go. So...I printed out the first "week at a glance" but...that just tells me what I will need for the first week, ha! Obviously!

Just trying to get an idea. I may need to just get the TE guides for now, look through them to see what I can get to get started.

Thanks for you help.

Thank you again to everyone who helped me in deciding which program to use. I have read reviews, I have read the philosophy of education on this sight and I am very much at peace w/ going w/ HOD!!!!! This is a huge relief, praise the Lord.

Blessings,

Kim (HS mom of 7)

I think there is info. on this topic somewhere, but I'm not very good at searching this board. So, I'll try to help you out.
A First Book in American History and Journeys in Time are needed at the beginning. Unit 6 adds Stories of Great Americans.
Little Pillows and Hymns for a Kid's Heart are used every week.
Science starts with One Small Square: Seashore and adds Science in Colonial American in unit 5.

You might also want to check your local library, as I found many of the suggested books available at our library. In addition, A First Book in American History and Stories of Great Americans are both available on-line, for free.

You know what...I think I have Stories of Great Americans...I will need to look. Yepper...think I am going to need to use the library some. I don't want to wait to start until my school money comes because that is not until Feb., income tax time.

Hi Kim! :D

I wanted to pop in here and welcome you to HOD. We started out with Bigger with my oldest when we found HOD - it was a great year!

If you don't find that you already own Stories of Great Americans, you'll want to just order the Economy Pkg for Bigger now. When I just glanced at it, I saw the savings of ordering the pkg was more than the cost of the Wright Brothers book.

You'll also need something for math, English, & Cheerful Cursive.

For storytime, there are 4 options for each genre listed in the appendix. If you're wanting to use the library rather than order any of those books, I'd sure think that you could come up with one of those each time. :D

For the ERS, you'll start with the Bible you choose and use it for 9 weeks. (The Early Reader's Bible is the easier of the 2.) You'll need the DITHOR teacher guide and student book. You can get these in a pkg, along with Carrie's suggested book list. You could get books for DITHOR from a library pretty easily, too. You could either look at the options in the book packs for ideas or use the list that has different ideas.

Happy Shopping!
