RTR (13yo): Basic vs. Extension or Basic PLUS Extension??

Post by wow8kids » Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:47 pm

I think my subject asks it well enough, but it seems odd to post a blank body. :D I am looking at RTR for my 8th grader next year. Does he need both of the lists of books, or just the extension?

Thanks!

Doing RTR with an 8th grader next year. I got both. My daughter is a reader. If your child is very sensitive to the subject matter Carrie suggests you skip the extension. My child is not however I am very cautious. But I know Carrie is a very careful to screen things for content and I very much trust that she would not put anything in her programs that would be a problem for me. So long answer for we did both. It is your choice based on your child's reading level and maturity. :D

He could definitely handle reading both lists, because he, too, is an avid reader. However, does he need those 2 lists, PLUS a set of books for DITHOR? I'm not sure even HE can get through 45 books next school year!

I always have youngers and olders so I will generally be looking at both the read alouds and the extensions. Initially I thought that if you only had an older child you skipped the read alouds and used the extensions. I would call Carrie about that if you think you might not want both. If you think that is too many books for him, could you get creative and use the DITHOR alongside the books that are already scheduled in the package? (Ask Carrie or Julie if this is a good idea.)
For example: Use the artist or science book in the extension package as a biography. Use the Henty book about the Crusades as an adventure book. Use the Robin Hood book for folktale. Note: I am not an expert on this, and my categorizing of the books could even be off. This is just an idea from another mom of 8 who finds each year a little harder to fit everything in.

Stacey,

You don't "need" both. But you do "need" to pick one Basic/storytime package to enjoy with your family from any of the guides that you are using. Definitely, get the RTR extension package for your 8th grader. For a quick and easy route for DITHOR you could purchase the entire BASIC package and use 1/2 for DITHOR and 1/2 for free reading or simply purchase the books you need for DITHOR, which would not be a complete package.

Hope that helps!
