PH Left and CtC right...what for bible?

Post by threegreatkids » Sat Jan 30, 2010 8:11 pm

Next year in all likelihood I will have a 10 y.o. doing the left side of Preparing with her younger sister, and the right side of CtC. This is the logical "step up" from what she is doing this year which is working very well (Bigger left with PH right).
It is pretty obvious how this will work for most of the boxes...she would do all 5 boxes from the left side of Preparing, and Poetry, LA, Math and Science from CtC. But what would replace the bible Study box in Preparing? The Bible Study/Geography box on the right side of CtC or the Bible Quiet Time box on the left side of CtC? Or both? Or something completely different?
I just ordered a CtC manual to peruse as I start thinking about next year, so maybe it will be obvious when I see it. I really like planning/decision making during these cold winter months, so when spring comes my decisions are all
made :D

Well, good question! :D Here are a few considerations that may help you decide. The Bible Quiet Time box is completely independent, while the BIble Study box is teacher directed.

For the Bible Quiet TIme box, dc use The Illustrated Family Bible, reading several pages from there on their own. Children probably need to be fairly strong readers to do that. They also memorize all of Phil. 2 and sing it along with a CD. Finally, they learn to pray using the ACTS model.

The Bible Study box must be done with the parent and uses Genesis Finding Our Roots. It is an excellent Bible Study on Genesis; it is quite meaty. We've talked about genealogies, how to figure dates of occurrences, worldview, different world accounts of the Flood, etc. It fits well with the Ancients time period, but also gives an excellent foundation for understanding the Bible, and how so much of it is based on Genesis.

I guess I'd lean toward having dd do CTC's Bible Quiet Time box when doing PHFHG's core (left page), and if you have time the following year, do Genesis with the 2 of them when doing CTC's core (left page). However, you will know best what you'd enjoy, and getting the manual will definitely help with that decision as well. Whatever you decide, we've really enjoyed doing both this year, so either one is a good choice! :D

Julie,
Thanks for your thoughts on this! After reading your response I'm leaning toward having her use the Bible Quiet Time box. She's just starting to "get" the idea of having a quiet time once a week in Preparing, so I'd hate not to continue with it. I'd never thought about the fact that it's a real transition to go from parent-directed bible study to a personal quiet time. I'm so glad Carrie has worked that transition into the programs- does she
forget anything  ?
I like the idea of saving the Genesis study to do with both girls together, as it sounds like that is one which would work nicely for multiple children. Am I correct that the new RtR program will also have a Bible Quiet Time box? That way, if we continue on the current path that we're on, in '11-'12 they would each have an independent quiet time daily and combine for the Genesis/Geography study. Of course I'm getting way ahead of myself here :)
Thanks again,

Yes, you are right! RtR does have an independent Bible quiet time box. :) In fact, Carrie and I have talked at length about this as of late, so your question is very timely. We too have loved our dc spending with personal time the Lord such as this, though it is nice to change up the details of it each year, we hope to continue this in the hopes it will instill a habit of daily time in the Word for our dc. :D

threegreatkids,

These are terrific questions. I fully agree that it would work well to have your older one do the Bible Quiet Time box from CTC next year, while joining in on the Preparing Hearts studyfrom the left side of the guide. Then, the following year you'll be able to enjoy the Genesis study and geography study with both kiddos, discussion-style in CTC. :D

We are continuing the path of a Bible Quiet Time in RTR. It will be focused on a study of the book of Philippians. So, your plan should work well. The Bible-study part to be done together in RTR will focus on becoming a woman or a man of God. This will be done through a study and discussion of Beautiful Girlhood and/or Boyhood and Beyond. So, you'll be able to save that part to do together with your girls when they get to RTR.

Blessings,
Carrie
