LA in BLHFHG

Post by 2littlemisses » Thu Jan 21, 2010 6:27 pm

I was wondering what is used for handwriting in Beyond. I do not see anything for it in the catalog. We are doing LHFHG now for kindergarten. Planning for 1st grade in the fall.

Thank you

Copywork is scheduled daily in the language arts box as copying part of the weekly poem. We're doing K in LHFHG too, and I don't know if my ds will be ready for that when we get there, so we may just substitute continuing into the next handwriting book. HTH :D

I think A Reason for Handwriting is suggested, but I'm not sure. That's what we used and my dc really liked it. They especially loved day 5, as they got to write the scripture verse and then color in the decorative border. There is copy work included in the Language Arts box some days, so that may be all there is for handwriting practice. I can't remember from when we used it and I don't have my manual with me right now so I can't check. I'm sure someone will confirm for you soon.

We are using ARFH A to go along with Beyond. The copy work was "too boring" for DD1 and she writes/copies all the time anyway, so I thought giving her a structured handwriting to work up to doing cursive next year would work nicely. Plus it's nice to have to let her do when we don't do HOD to be able to put together things to count for a school day :)

That's right. I am doing Beyond now with both of my kids. The handwriting is covered by the copywork that is scheduled in the Language Arts box. For first or second grade, I think that it is enough without adding another program.

Is there a book that comes with the package or do I just get some lined paper? She likes to copy words but is not big on the same letter over and over.

I'll be using this program next and I don't plan to get a handwriting program. My book is packed up right now but I use the Awana verses for handwriting and my son is using 100 EZ Lessons and ETC and there is handwriting in there as well.

All you need is lined paper for her to do the copywork in. She will be copying a part of the poem you are reading that week each day.

Instead of lined paper, I got a composition notebook for my daughter. It's one geared toward younger children (I think it says for grades K-2 on it???), so it has larger lines with the dotted line between. It has lines only on the bottom half and the top half is blank. My daughter likes to draw a picture in that space that goes along with her copy work when she is done....although sometimes the picture doesn't match the copywork at all and just happens to be something she wanted to draw!

That way I don't have to worry about keeping all the pages together and we can both see how her copywork/penmenship are progressing quickly and easily. Don't know if that is helpful or not, but it's what we do. :D

holyhart,

That is exactly what she needs! She loves to make up stories, of course I write them for her but as she progresses she can write her own. She can have one for stories and one for copywork.

The ladies here always have the best ideas! Just one of many reasons I love HOD!

Thank you.

You can always have her do A Reason for Handwriting A if she's already writing words well, as this moves into words and sentences quite quickly. We just had my ds write 3 letters rather than the whole line of them, but I told him those 3 had to be pretty awesome then! :D
