My son is a writer too!!!

Post by my3sons » Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:19 pm

I am so excited about what Write with the Best is doing for my ds's writing! I love to write myself, so it has always been hard that my oldest ds has not seemed to take much of an interest in it. Last year, with PHFHG's poetry lessons, he began to bloom - and this year in CTC, he is practically bursting with creative writing ideas! :D He's even inspired me to begin writing again, and we are both loving reading our stories to one another. Anyway, here's his latest descriptive paragraph from Write with the Best. He had to describe a place, and he chose to describe our backyard, which I thought could be quite difficult to make very interesting. :? However, I'm so happy with the results...

The shining green carpet of grass had been surprisingly attacked by different skin-colored tribes of leaves. Burnt Umber, Sunny Yellow, Rain Day Orange, and Brownish Red all did their best to ruin the grasses' handsome day. The grass fought off the first attack and enlisted all of their grass blade men. The leaves had so many more leaf men and kept enlisting more soldiers that plummeted down from their strongholds, joining the attack. Then the reinforcements for the leaves hit. Out the bluejays strutted from their evergreen pyramid. With their blue shawls and their white vests and black buttons, the bluejays looked beautiful beside the tribes pecking viciously. Halfway through the combat, the birds lay down for 10 minutes, squawking at any thing disturbing their afternoon nap. The enormous geese got tired seeing the fight. They quickly took off to visit their cousins down south. Just as the grass started turning yellow from exhaustion, the leaves withered away and the grass lived to fight another season.

I just wanted to share my joy with all my fellow HOD ladies, and also encourage you that if you have a child who doesn't seem to like to write creatively, I think doing PHFHG and CTC will get that ball rolling in the right direction. :D

P.S. He used the water color paint names for ideas for the names of the leaves and capitalized them because he used personification! :D

Your son did an awesome job!
We too are having good results in the area of poetry with my older dd (6th grade). By using the poetry in Preparing my dd has developed a love for writing poetry. She is pretty good at it, too. Preparing has seemed to unlock a hidden talent I did not know she had. She has always struggled in the area of writing, so this has been a huge encouragement to her. She is excited because in one of her up and coming sections in Truth and Training (AWANA)for church she has to write a poem. She is looking forward to that section in her AWANA book. I just thought I'd share that .

Julie,

Wow, very impressive! I had such fun reading that!
I read your son's piece out loud and my husband was listening in. We were both really amazed with the detail and my husband thought he had such a good command of the english language.
Thanks for sharing and way to go mom and son!

Julie,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wyatt's descriptive passage. It gives me so much pleasure to see him blooming as a writer, and I love seeing the creative side of him come out (especially since he's such a matter-of-fact kiddo)! :D You can be so pleased!

Thanks for sharing!

Blessings,
Carrie

playschool,

I was so encouraged by your post about your daughter and the way she is thriving in writing poetry. I loved seeing my own son bloom in that area last year as he became so excited about writing poetry too. Robert Louis Stevenson is a wonderful poet to fuel kiddos' imaginations, and his wording is a wonderful model for young writers to imitate. :D

Thanks for sharing!

Blessings,
Carrie

Julie,

I loved Wyatt's paragraph!! :D The battle for control of the yard was a great way to describe the changes of fall! I'll have to let Grant read it tomorrow. He was really kind of bummed today when we did our writing lesson in Preparing because for the 2nd week in a row he was supposed to write a paragraph - NOT a poem. He really likes writing poetry! (And he must have thought that I was trying to spoil his fun. ) He came up with a pretty good description of taking a walk down to the pond in the pasture behind our house. I agree that we are really enjoying the writing lessons in Preparing (and we're only getting started it looks like!). :D
