Questions on DITHOR

Post by NicoleJ » Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:17 pm

Hi - just wondering...
a) How long does it take you to do a DITHOR lesson (on average)? I will have a Gr 2 or 3.
b) How does it exactly work? I have looked at the online samples, and I just can't seem to get my head around it all.
c) What are the pros/cons that you have found with this program?

THANKS! Nicole

I wish I could answer you because we LOVE DITHR here. However, I am doing it with a 5th grader using the 4/5 book, so I can't really tell you how long the activities for a 2/3 take (until next year when my youngest son uses it ;)) What I can tell you is that it varies. One day may be a simple "he reads and then does the activity" whereas another day could be quite long - "he reads X pgs to himself, then reads X pages to mom, then we discuss the activity and write answers on the white board, and then he spends time writing the answers in his book." So really, it just varies (again, not sure for 2/3 age and I would assume it also depends on how independently your child can work as well).

How does it work? You start a genre with your child. It should take 15 days to read the book you have chosen for him/her from that genre. You can have her read one book in 15 days, 2 books in 7/8 day each s, or 3 books at 5 days each. Once you decide ont he book, you make a calendar for her to follow with the page numbers she is to read for that day. The activities in the student book correspond with the day of reading. The TG will tell you whether the activity is Independent or teacher directed and how to carry out the lesson if need be. Then you just follow the TG and the reading calendar.

As for the pros/cons - I have used LOTS of reading programs and DITHR is hands down the BEST one I have used. It really gets my son thinking and it digs deep into the characters, the Godly/not so Godly traits they display, etc. It is NOT just a book study or a reading assignment. It is SO MUCH MORE. I have yet to find any "cons."

HTH!
