Writing in Bigger

Post by sted » Tue Jul 28, 2009 3:32 pm

Question if I'm doing Beyond left side for two kids and using right side Bigger for the older, is there enough writing in there for a 9yr. old who struggles with writing? Do I have her do lots of written narrations with a book like Am. Pioneer and Patriots to practice? I know the written narrations are built into the Bigger history plans but can I adapt them to fit with Beyond History?

Thanks,
Shannon

Shannon,

I don't feel qualified to tell you what your 9 yo needs as far as writing...

But, I have done Bigger. I know that Carrie lays out how to start written narrations in Preparing, not Bigger. In Bigger, the narrating is all still oral unless you're using the extension pack. Then, I know that it's mentioned to have the kids do a written narration some of the time as a follow-up to their reading. (We didn't use the extension pack though, so I honestly haven't even really read through that part of the guide.)

Hopefully someone will come along to help you out more.

The instructions for us in the Bigger extension pack are basically to have them narrate orally twice a week, write about it twice a week, and draw a picture about it once a week. It doesn't go into detail and I think that is because it is left to the parent to determine what their child needs practice on, can do, etc . (please someone correct me if I am wrong). My older son is turning 10 in a week and I just have him write a paragrapg when he finished his extensions in Bigger. Right now, he is reading 2 books - A Child's History of America and Pedro's Journal. Today, he wrote a paragraph about Pedro's Journal and then filled my ear full about those silly sailors on Columbus' ship. :) That was plenty for him. :)
