For Those Waiting a Month to Begin DITHOR...

Post by Daisy » Sat Jul 11, 2009 8:16 pm

For those of you who are planning on waiting until you have routines established to begin DITHOR, will you assign your child any reading during that month? Or will you just let them free read whatever interests them?

I'm trying to decide if it is worth assigning my 10yo a book during that period. She loves to read so she will be reading anyway.

We did do a reading list and it was enjoyable. We read a book a week or some were two weeks. We didn't really do anything with the book but talk about it and maybe do something in a reading journal sometimes. We have been doing BHFHG for 6 weeks and I plan to start DITHOR 2/3 Monday. I did it to help with my schedule and to keep dd8 into the habit of having a set reading time during our school day. She would have balked at adding something else if we weren't already doing something during that time.
She also did free reading when she wanted to, but I felt it was really important to have an expected book for her to read and us to talk about at the least.

If I don't get too excited to wait that long, I am actually planning to wait until February to start DITHR. I have a DD who is doing speech therapy intensively and still needs to finish phonics. When we finish the phonics, I will start DITHR. Until then, she will just be reading DITHR books of the same genre she would be studying. That way, we are getting the exposure to the different genres at least. I bought the Sample Book List to be able to help me find appropriate books for both the genres and reading levels we needed.

Best wishes!
