Independent work for two using same program?

Sorry for all of my questions...

I will have two in preparing and there are a couple of independent areas. THe ind. history isn't a problem because one is using extensions. But do you have them use the TM at different times of day and work independently on the science and any other ind. work? or do you have them do it together. This would esp be a problem if they need books for the assignment. I was trying to put their main subjects together. Maybe when one is doing ind. hist, the other can do the science? What did other people do? I am also trying to keep them ind at the same time to give me time to do LHFHG.

I like your idea of having one do indp. science while the other is doing indp. history. I'd be too worried about one monopolizing the resources having them work together.

While dd does the Draw and Write in the Independent History box, my ds reads his Independent History Extension to me. He and I take turns reading the paragraphs aloud. He really likes this time with me.

I know that the Science portion is supposed to be independent but we are new to HOD so I am doing it this way for now.

That makes sense too. I am hoping we can become independent quickly, but I realize it may take time. I will take it slow. Do you feel like your older ds is "missing" out by not doing the Draw and Write.. It looks so good and my DS loves to draw. But I don't want to push him to do too much along with the extensions.

At first he seemed a little envious and asked why he wasn't supposed to do it too. So I asked and found out that he wasn't "required" to do it so I just told him that if he wanted to he could. He said he might but he hasn't made the time for it yet. He hasn't mentioned it again and calls me over to the couch to read the Mammoth book when she does her Draw & Write. If you feel that he would enjoy it but wouldn't make the time for it on his own, you could just start him off doing it at first. Then if he seems to be weighted down with too much work you could drop it and tell him it's optional. Once dd is out of Draw & Write I may wind up having to help her along a little too because she isn't a very strong reader. DS is a fairly strong reader and he could be doing his on his own but I'm interested in the book now.

I was thinking the same thing about the Draw & Write. My oldest doing extensions will miss out on it as well, and she really loves to draw too. Once I get a chance to really look at the extension reading that coincides with the Draw & Write, I *might* just have her do Draw & Write instead of the Extension reading just for that few weeks. Hope to see more thoughts on this!

Are they both in the same level of grammar? If they aren't you could alternate one doing the Science while you work with the other in grammar.

Draw & Write is used through Unit 12 and then reintroduced for a few days during units 14 and 15 to do an illustration that coincides with the history project. If you skipped the extension books during this time you would miss the entire mammoth book, most of the ancient world encyclopedia, and some of the Aesop's Fables. I thought you had a great idea though. I may just wind up having my son do both now that I've looked at all the neat things in the Independent history boxes. I don't want him to miss the extension books either as it looks like he will really enjoy them. Hmm...decisions, decisions.

We shall see. I really like the ease of HOD and if she planned extensions to be seperate from the Deluxe, as opposed to in addition, then I am sure theres a good reason But... He loves to draw

Ahh, I keep missing the point about them being ind so you can work with the others. Sorry. I think having him read it at bedtime will be a great idea. In fact I may try this myself.

Would it work to swap out during DITHOR? DITHOR becomes more and more independent as they get older, and the DITHOR reading is pretty independent starting with 4/5. Could one be doing the science, while you get the other one going with DITHOR? I'm not sure if you're doing DITHOR together though - if they're in the same level, maybe it's just easier to keep them together for that.

Otherwise, I'd have them read the science books out loud together, alternating pages, and then do the hands-on part together next. I'm so glad the schedules thread helped - I love that thread, and it gives lots of great ways to make a schedule that fits each of our own homes.
