Emerging reader question

Post by WigglesMom » Mon May 25, 2009 8:46 am

My ds6 can read and reads well up until you get to the special sounds oo, ou, ow for example. I have bought the reading lesson and plan to just do a quick run through of some of the lessons and try to find where he needs to start to pick up these sounds.
That said, he can read Dr. Seuss emerging readers, Level 1 and 2 of staged readers. We have the 12 phonics books that are stories that go up in difficulty and normally focus on one sound by Scholastic. We have the Dora (I had 2 girls before him) and Spongebob scholastic leveled readers. Spongebob is the first phase of the books-12 books that use words in the story that focus on alphabet sounds and blends. He can do them easy. Dora is 2nd phase of the books-12 books doing blends and special sounds. He can read them up to book 10 where the evil oo, ou, ow rear their ugly head.
He is a good reader and is past the little bob book type readers. I do have CLP's 4 readers that go with Adventures in Phonics that I could start out with. I am just thinking of starting him with the emerging readers and taking it super slow. Maybe I read through it first, then he tries without me, then he reads without my help.
I am just not wanting to overwhelm him and I am not wanting to not challenge him enough to progress in his reading.
I know that he needs work on specific areas of the Reading Lesson and that he can read emerging readers with some help from me. Not a lot of help, just a few words a page. Should I start him with the emerging readers selections at the same time I work on his weak areas in the Reading Lesson? I have BHFHG (using it with Big Sis) and have a schedule of the readers and selections I would need. He is doing 1st grade LHFHG and will be 7 in December.
Do you think I should try him with the emerging readers or continue to pick up stage 1 and 2 books and do more of the Dr. Seuss emerging readers.
Thanks,
Val

That is a good question. I am having the same issues just about with my two kids. I am very interested to see some advice here about this.

Val,

I would wait to begin the Emerging Reader's Schedule until you have completed The Reading Lesson. The Emerging Reader's Schedule is meant for a child who is solidly able to read the Emerging Reader books easily with little pausing or decoding help from the parent and is not meant to be a phonics completer set. Instead, it's focus is to help the child with fluency and encourage smooth reading (after all phonics sounds have been learned) while gradually raising a child's reading level up to beginning chapter book style readings. :D

Once you have found the spot where your child fits well within The Reading Lesson, I would teach from that spot directly through to the end of The Reading Lesson. When The Reading Lesson has all been completed, your son will be ready to begin the Emerging Reader's Set. In the meantime, you can easily add the rest of the Bob Books for your son, or any other Level 1 and 2 readers that you desire. The Bob books actually go up a long way having many different sets worth exploring.

Blessings,
Carrie
