Dictation question?

Post by Tiffany » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:18 pm

I feel silly asking this question, but I am brand new to the Charlotte Mason approach. What is dictation? From reading posts I'm guessing it has something to do with spelling.

Tiffany,

Dictation is reading aloud a sentence or a few sentences (based on your child's level) and having your child write down what they are hearing. First you would have them study the sentence or passage. Then when they are ready you read it aloud to them w/o them see it, and they write it down. You then have them compare what they wrote with the text to check for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation mistakes. If they get it perfect they move on to the next text, if not then you do it again the next day.

This helps them to see words in context to the sentence.

That sounds really interesting. What level of the program does this begin? Are the sentences from the Bible or books?

Thank-you for bringing this subject up, I'm a couple of years away from using dictation but now I'll know what to expect and won't shy away from it. :D
