New to HFHG

Post by dagjshaw » Wed Apr 15, 2009 4:43 pm

Hi! I am really thinking of switching from Beyond Five in a Row to Preparing Hearts for his Glory. I have an 8 (9 next school year) and 11 year old. My 8 year old does not know how to write in cursive and doesn't handle long dictation well (yet) but she is an excellent reader and comprehends EVERYTHING very, very (almost too) well! I'm on a strict budget and was curious what the bare minimum could be or what really is needed to make this a very thorough program. Also, has anyone used the extended version and how advanced is it? I was intrigued by this because God is in it sooo much and it's very well planned out, which I need desperately but am concerned on what exactly to order and costs restraints.

We have just returned from convention and will be working through answering emails on the board tomorrow, however for this evening I'll move this post to the main board so more moms will see it. This folder is for archived threads for Preparing Hearts. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I think your post got buried in the board! I'm so sorry about that! :D For any of our programs, you can truly get by with the Economy Package and the "Choices" items if needed. We write our guides and design our packages so that they are accessible to almost all families with their varying budgetary needs. :D

If you haven't already checked our placement chart, then that is a great place to begin when placing your kiddos. I would lean toward placing them in either Bigger Hearts or Preparing Hearts, depending on where they fit best based on the first page of the placement chart. Here's a link to the chart: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

I'd love to hear your thoughts after you've had a chance to check-out the chart. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Welcome to the HOD Board! :D I agree checking out the placement chart will help you accurately place your dc, but from what you've shared, the age ranges and skill levels of your dc seem to mostly match PHFHG or otherwise, Bigger Hearts for His Glory with extensions. We are in the last month of PHFHG, and it has been wonderful! Your almost 9 yo dd could just add a cursive program (we loved Cheerful Cursive), and do the first level of dictation in PHFHG. Your older child would love the extension package, and would do the highest level of dictation. R & S English 3 and 4 are both scheduled in PHFHG, and Singapore Math 2A/2B, 3A/3B, 4A/4B, have schedules as well. I'm not sure what your dc have done in those areas, but it is easy to customize as needed with HOD. Because R & S English is considered advanced, HOD's goal is to have dc complete Level 6 by Grade 8. You can be more or less aggressive than that to match your personal goals as needed. PHFHG has given us the best year! It has been an answer to prayer - I do not plan ahead for this, God is in every part of it, and the books... oh my, the books!!! They are truly amazing! We have also loved the CM style of doing LA skills that are incorporated in the HOD plans in a completely doable (and clear) way. Hope to hear back from you here after you check the chart out! :D :D :D
