Language arts for older dc using extensions...

Post by angela&4boys » Fri Apr 10, 2009 1:41 pm

Would you mind sharing what you use for older dc for language arts? I'd love to hear what's working for others.

I'm still not sure what I'll use for Aaron (almost 12yo), but I like the looks of Write With the Best that Carrie has incorporated with Hearts for Him for composition.

Also, do you use dictation with your older? And if so, how? I've learned that Preparing has several levels, but would like my "older" to do it as well.

We'll be finishing up Winston Grammar, but I'm not sure where we'll go after that.

Your thoughts are appreciated,
~Angela~

Angela,

Which HOD program are you looking at using? You may wish to consider getting CTC for the upper level dictation passages in the Appendix, the upper level grammar scheduled for Rod and Staff and the Write with the Best schedule. Of course, I'm biased, but along with DITHR that would be my recommendation for your 12 year old! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you so much for responding Carrie. And fwiw, your bias is greatly appreciated! I was actually quite curious as to what your boys do in terms of language arts at this age. I sent you a lengthy email that may give you better insight as to where my boys are, but I'm in no hurry for a response. (I realized I sent it on Good Friday. )

As far as specific programs, I'm looking at Bigger (because American history is the preferred study right now) and Preparing (because it seems to best fit the targeted age range). However, I'm not opposed to doing CTC on the right side for my 12yo (Aaron). I'm just very leary to cover Creation to Early Church because we just finished it. Two kind HODers (Rebecca and Amy) gave me some great suggestions on another home school board.

Is it possible to do the left side of BHFHG or PHFHG for both and use the right of CTC only for Aaron without too much confusion? I noticed that there is some Bible study on the right of CTC and I'm not sure where that would fit in.

Another possiblilty might be to do PHFHG for both and get the extensions for Aaron? That seems the easiest, but I don't want to make the decision based on ease alone.

I am wondering this exact same thing. I am planning on Preparing and Beyondor Bigger as well as Little Hearts for next year. But want to make sure my 11/12 year old will have enough higher level basics. I am just curious as to Carries response about the Right of Preparing and the Left of CTC? I will have a 1.5 year old, 3 and 4 year olds, slow learning 1st grade 7 yr old. quick learning 8 yr old 3rd grader and a very bright 6th grader... I just don't know what to do. Maybe I will email Carrie and get some advice :?

Hi Carrie,

Yes, I did receive your response and it helped tremendously! I know I'm close to a decision... just a little more prayer.

Thank you. :D

Hi Rebecca,

I'm so sorry! I just saw your response to my questions here after looking through old posts. A little late, but just wondering if you were nearer a decision and if you were able to email Carrie??

We've decided to use Bigger in it's entirety for Ben (9) and beef up the history for Aaron (almost 12) as well as do the right side of CTC for Learning the Basics. I'm anxious to begin and just wish August would hurry up and get here. :D

Please let us know if you've decided and I'll say a prayer either way,
