Bigger Hearts ? for Older Students

Post by momto3ms » Sun Mar 01, 2009 10:30 am

Hello again, I have read a lot of messages and I have been really inspired and refreshed to use HOD. For those of you that are using BHFHG for older students, what are your plans after that? My son will be in the 8th grade in the Fall and I really would like to use Bigger, but I have to look at 9th grade and above and also meet the state requirements for history and literature. Those of you that have children that have started HOD in the later stages, do you mind sharing what you are doing to meet the needs of your state and still using HOD? I absolutely love the books that have been picked out to go along with the course study. Truly I am like a little kid in the candy store, so much to choose from, and to be honest I want it all :? . I think from what I have read, he would flourish by starting out with Bigger, but then I feel like if I start in Preparing for 8th grade, then I could get him into Hearts for the 9th grade, and so on.... You see my dilemma. Sorry so many questions, I am just so sad that I did not find this curriculum earlier.

momto3ms,

Welcome to the boards! :D We're glad you're here. If you haven't already had a chance to check out our placement chart, you'll definitely want to start there. Here's a link to the chart: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

Next, strictly going by your son's age and with the programs we have currently written, our new guide on the ancients would come closest to meeting your son's age range. If you are combining with another student, then you may wish to consider Preparing Hearts with Extensions as well.

Our newest guide on the ancients is targeted for ages 9-11 with extensions for ages 12-13. Preparing Hearts is a one-year overview of world history and is targeted for ages 8-10 with extensions for ages 11-12. :D

Our literature program, Drawn into the Heart of Reading would also fit your son's age level, as it goes from grades 2-8. Your son would most likely be able to use the 4/5 Level or the 6/7/8 Level of DITHR, depending on how he feels about written work. :D

If you have other information you'd love to share about your son, or any other kiddos you may have that would help us advise you better. 8)

If you get a chance to pop back in after looking over the placement chart, it would be great to hear more of what you're thinking! 8)

Blessings,
Carrie

Welcome to the HOD Board! I just had to tell you I loved this thought - that is so true! :D That's the way I feel about the resources in HOD. AND, I am very thankful the "candy store" isn't overstocked or understocked - KWIM? I love books, but book fairs can be overwhelming for me. It's nice to have HOD's book shop at my fingertips for my "candy" (books :) ). I will check back here too after you post a bit more and chime in on this chat!

In Christ,
Julie :D

Thanks, I did check out the placement chart and this is why I look like this  (smile). My son is 13, not really motivated to do school. I mentioned in a previous post that he is a very "artsy" child. He loves to draw, he makes clay scupltures. School just does not motivate him, if I allowed him to only draw, he would do that all day long. My daughter 10 on the other hand, loves reading, math, science... I have tried so many curriculums that I am at my wits end. I know I was lead by God to come to this site, because I truly had my mind made up to use MFW ECC with them both, hoping that this would get him interested in learning and also apply his artistic side as well. I just really like the layout of HOD, I was leaning toward Bigger, because neither one has had a really strong American History background. I really want to keep them together because I have a soon to be 5 year old that I will use the Little Hands in the Fall. So I am just trying to make sure that I am in sync with him by the time he gets in the 9th grade so that I meet all of the necessary state requirements. Thank you again Carrie and everyone else for answering my questions.

Sonya,

I'm thinking with all of the things you mentioned that your son enjoys that you may want to take a good look at Preparing Hearts for both of your kiddos. There is something hands-on scheduled in the plans everyday with history projects divided up over 3 days and a science experiment on the 4th day of each unit. There is also the Draw and Write book scheduled in the Deluxe Package that I'm sure he would love. We do have notebooking in science that incorporates drawing each week, and kiddos draw their science procedure each week as well. The readings in Preparing Hearts are interesting too! You could have the kiddos read them on their own, or you could read them aloud to both of them (depending on whichever you think would grab their interest best).

I know you mentioned not having much American history up to this point, but you'll get some through Preparing Hearts. I'm concerned that Bigger Hearts may be too much of a step back for your 13 year old skill-wise, although your 10 year old would be fine in it. :D

Those are a few of my thoughts. I'd love to hear more of what you're thinking too! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
