Question about Spelling

Post by Amey » Mon Feb 23, 2009 9:06 pm

I remember Julie posting about this at one point, but I can't recall the thread. In regards to how HOD teaches spelling, how are your kids doing with it? I am a little nervous to give up my "spelling rules" oriented program in favor of this more simple approach. I still use spelling rules from time to time "i before e, except after c" etc. when spelling myself, so I'm just wondering if any of these rules are included in HOD's spelling along the way, or what the thinking is behind the way Carrie has it set up. :)

Hi There,

Here's a thread that may help you. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1246

In short, HOD does not use spelling rules, just good ole dictation. We, too, just switched from a rules based approach and are finding the dication to not only be extraordinarily gentle, but extremely effective. My boys really needed to build up their confidence hearing and writing down what they heard. The dictation is working wonders and their spelling skills seems to be solidifying. Carrie mentioned in a precious post that dictation is a "slow burn". You need to give it a full year's worth of effort with at least 3 days a week.

Check the thread and post back with questions.
With Joy!

Thank you Florence! That was the exact thread I was remembering! Hearing those testimonies is great encouragement to trust the CM process...looks like I too will ditch the traditional spelling program with shaky hands! :D

Amey,

I know what you mean! I struggled to take the plunge too, but it has been very good for both of my boys. :D My oldest son is on his 5th year of dictation now, and my second son is on his second year of dictation. 8)

Blessings,
Carrie
