What is a 4 Day Plan?

Post by GingerN » Fri Sep 12, 2008 6:11 am

Good morning ladies. I will be receiving our new Bigger package next week, and am doing research while I wait. :) I have seen here several mentions of a '4 day plan'. Is that specifically described in the manuals, or is it more of a 'doubling up' on the readings through the week so you have finished everything in 4 days instead of 5? Since we meet together with a few families on Friday afternoons, this would be of great help to me. TIA for your help.

A 4-day plan is when you just do school 4 days a week...or your HOD anyway. Some ladies do other things on the 5th day that are separate. Up through Bigger...the plans are written using 5 days for each unit..or as a 5-day plan. There are a couple of ways you could do it. It could be as you described...doubling up until you complete 5 days within 4. Or, you could just do 4 days and pick back up with day 5 on Monday(or whatever day you begin again). Either way should be doable. In Preparing... and up, I believe the plans are written to be completed in 4 days...and the 5th day is yours to do with as you wish...extra studies, moving right into the next unit, field trips, etc. I hope that helps clarify...sometimes we refer to things here and just assume everyone is 'in the know'. Sorry for the confusion!

Thanks so much. Knowing how I love to stick to plans as they are written :) , I'll probably keep with the 5 day pace for at least a bit until we see how our days are flowing. Blessings~

I just do 4 days of the plans as is, and pick up with the next day when we do school. So, sometimes on Monday, we're on Day 1; sometimes we're on Day 4; etc. It works for us. :D On Fridays we spend more time outside, do art, composer study, sometimes we have a field trip with our local homeschoolers... During the winter we may do 5 day weeks. I'm not positive yet.

Thank you, Kathleen, for more great ideas to consider. I have wondered if I should do something like that in the past, but the programs I used had the whole 5 day week on 1 page, so it would drive me nutty not to 'finish' the page by Friday. :? I remember the sample of HOD being 1 day's plans to the page...so this idea would also work for me. Good to have some time for nature study, grocery and library trips, etc. Thanks again~

Ginger the way it is laid out up to and including Bigger (because Preparing is written for 4 days) is you get a unit dot #. So it is 1.1-1.5 for each section. I started last year and did enough to have a nice cozy 4 day HOD week and we will do a fifth day Bible reading and other things. I am like you if it says do it I would be trying to fit it in. But the way HOD is written it does not bug me a bit. I just stick my clip on the page we left off and start where ever we are the next day. I stopped paying attention to the numbers even. I guess the reason for that it in all honesty HOD flows pretty much any way you slice it. There is almost no way to ruin it. :D I have done it so many different ways and it still works. So bottom line is when you end up with the same feel you don't panic about the week being finished a certain way. With other programs ending a unit mid week would feel like ending a unit mid week, but not with HOD. But I would reccomend doing it the way it is written until you are familiar with it and then use it how works best for your family. :D

Thank you very much for describing the manual for me! I think this has relieved my 'do things completely, in order' mind. If our Fridays get too congested, I can just have some freedom with this plan. Now if I can just sit still and wait patiently for our goodies without tackling the mail carrier...
