Sending an Introduction and Asking for Opinions

Post by GingerN » Mon Sep 08, 2008 6:45 am

Greetings everyone. I am new to this board and new to Heart of Dakota, too. I am a long-time homeschooling mom of 4 beautiful daughters, the oldest being a college graduate and married. My remaining 3 are ages 15, 10 and 9. I am intending to purchase the 'Bigger' program for my youngers...as the plans I had for them this year simply did not work as I had hoped. :? I have enjoyed pouring over the samples and reading the joyful posts here at the message board. Thanks for all the wisdom you have shared. It is unfortunate that I spent so much time pondering that I failed to purchase my goodies before this dear family went on vacation...but I can use this waiting time to prepare for the transition. My last decision needs some input from you. How do you implement a total program like Bigger and also add the Drawn Into the Heart of Reading program at the same time? Is this necessary? Is this essential? The book surely looks interesting but I don't know how much extra time and energy it would take to use it, too. Is DITHOR an easy addition to your day? I would welcome any advice/experience you could share with me today. Blessings to you all~

Ginger welcome! :D Yes it is very easy to combine DITHR and HOD actual programs. They are both very user friendly and the author has designed them to be used together. DITHR has a suggested schedule that you can use a few ways. It is very easy to implement. It does require some teacher interaction but of course the reading is independent. You will actually be reminded in your HOD program to do DITHR so they are designed to use together or separately. If you chose not to do DITHR you would need another reading program to use with HOD. I hope that helps and welcome!

Many thanks for your helpful reply. Now I see that the two coordinate with each other, and both are necessary. Am I understanding correctly that any reading books can be used during the DITHR part of the day? I had already made some reader purchases that are 'waiting around' to be used. So when it calls for a 'biography', then you switch from your main lesson in the HOD and move to the DITHR book for reading time? I hope I am understanding...but I know it will be very easy when I can actually hold the books in my hand. :) Many thanks~

:D :D Welcome Ginger!! :D :D

This is my 1st year to use Bigger and DITHOR and it works great! Like water2wine said, DITHOR is the reading program reccommended to use with HOD. If you don't use DITHOR, you'd need to be covering that using some other program, so I wouldn't say that it "adds" any time to your day. DITHOR takes us about 20-30 minutes to do. We're really enjoying it.

I'm going to type one more thing that I was a little confused about when I was first looking at Bigger and DITHOR...feel free to ignore it if it all makes sense to you, but from your post, I thought you might be confused about the same thing. In the daily plans there is "storytime" scheduled as well as "reading choices". Storytime is where you will read to your child. Reading choices (DITHOR would be your reading choice) is where your child reads to you. In the Bigger manual these both use books from the 9 literary genres. You don't have to worry about trying to stay in the same genre for both.

Some moms use DITHOR 3 times a week rather than daily. That's up to you. I'm using it daily this year, but I know that when we get into Preparing it is scheduled to use 3 times a week.

Feel free to ask any more questions. The moms here are very helpful!

Thank you, Kathleen, that was very helpful!. Yes, I was wondering about story time and reading time, but after I read over that sample about 5 times, a light bulb went off. I love to read aloud, but I have not been having my youngers read to me, so I am sure they will love that extra attention as we sit on the couch together. I am placing my order this evening and have decided to purchase the packages for Bigger and DITHOR, as it sounds very beneficial. Again, thanks ladies for the sweet welcome and thoughtful advice.

Ginger,

I am not sure if this part got answered already or not but yes you can use the books you already have waiting to be read for DITHR. The beauty of the program is you can use any book with it and just match it up by what genre the book is. You do need the Teachers Guide which is for all levels and to be used over and over and the Student Guide which is by level and reproducible (thank you HOD for understanding that just because you have six kids does not mean that you want to buy the same workbook six times! ). So in that way it matches your book by your child's reading level to the program. :D You can buy books in the bookstore on HOD's site, or you can use what you have or even use the library if you have a good one. The list is great ofr other suggestions that HOD sells. It is well worth it becuase they are all books that have been checked by HOD. I am picky with the books I let my kids have and I know Carrie is also picky so it saves me a ton of time checking things out. Plus she is a great book picker. HTH

Ginger,

The ladies have done such a wonderful job of helping and encouraging you! I just wanted to pop-in and welcome you too! My sister is shipping orders for us several days this week while we're gone (what a blessing!), so you should have your order quite quickly. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
