Placement for a 5 year old

Post by Angle1110 » Mon Feb 02, 2015 7:43 am

This is our first year homeschooling. My daughter is 5 (6 at the end of the year) and would be starting Kindergarten this year if she was going to public school. I did a little preschool work with her last year. She knows her letters pretty well. She holds a pencil well and can write some letters by memory. She can count to around 30, but we're still working on recognizing numbers. I decided to stop our preschool work until I had a good curriculum. I was afraid I'd end up confusing her by the time we got to letter sounds (mainly vowels). She really enjoys school and has been asking when we'll do it again. I do have a 2 year old son who could benefit from the curriculum as well. He'll be 3 in the fall. Any advice on curriculum would be appreciated!

I would probably do LHFHG with K options for her and just let the little one hang around. Start LHTH with him the next year. You might start the first few units half speed until you both get the hang of it. You'll be able to tell when she needs more.

There is a similar discussion about placing a 5.5 yo, and I think one of the ideas was to do LHTH at twice the speed, which I think might be great for your child as well. It will teach the letter sounds and reinforce numbers and colors. Then, next year you could do LHFHG with your then 6yo and slowly restart LHTH with your younger one.

I appreciate the input. I have ordered LHFHG! I'm very excited!
