Do you do anything special...
On Box Day for your children who are not receiving a brand new box of books and curriculum? I always feel like my middle son gets short changed on everything. He always gets "the hand-me downs". Big bro gets the nice big box of neat books and new school items, new clothes, new shoes and so on. This upcoming year will be his K year and I want him to feel special too. Any ideas or anything special that you do in your family? Should I get him his own set of books?

I take a picture of them with their new guide sometimes.. it seems to mean more to some of mine than others.

My boys love to pick new writing and art supplies as well as special notebooks:-)
Re: Do you do anything special...
At the beginning of the year I box/bundle up all their "new" books (often in their school bucket with just a garbage bag hiding the contents, lol) and have a time set aside for each child where we sit down and look over the new books that we'll do that year.
They may not be brand new but they're new to them and along with their new pencils, binder with paper & dividers (if necessary; tho even my LHFHG son got a binder with plain paper for his drawings), ruler, maybe a treat (if I remembered, lol - they loved a mini chocolate bar one year!), pen and whiteout for the older ones, etc. it becomes their special responsibility to care for those books (even if that means keeping them on a special shelf) for that year. In our case, the other kids need special permission to read those books and it's usually "only after ___ is finished with it this year." (Since my older ones didn't start with HOD they want to go back & read some of the younger ones for fun.)
This way, all of them get a set of books and they all get something new (scissors, crayons/markers, binder, paper, pencils - whatever is needed for their level or in our home at that point in time).
HTH!
Blessings,

I also take a picture of all my kids stuff that they will be covering for the year. My kids actually could less about box day. My oldest saw the box come for next year already and told me to send it back LOL. Don't get me wrong, my kids do love HOD for school and enjoy all the projects. But box day is WAY more exciting for me than them

Even my youngest ones end up with something new - new math workbooks, new coloring/fine motor skills books, new school supplies, etc. We bought Beyond and LHFHG together, so this year we didn't have any new guides. But, everyone got something when I ordered new math, etc. When I order our math (we use something other than Singapore, so I order from someplace other than HOD for that), I make sure there is SOMETHING in the box for all of them. It might just be a "cheap" coloring book, but it is something. And when we buy school supplies, everyone get basically the same things.
