Help With Placement

Hello, I have a 7 year old 2nd grader. I started beyond a few weeks ago and it is just to much for him. I tried doing it half speed, but i would really like to be doing math everyday. I'm thinking of switching to LHFHG. I feel like it might be light enough that he could do it all everyday. I'm thinking it would help his confidence level and help him to be better prepared to actually do beyond next year. I know that the LHFHG guide is for 5-7, and my son is 7 but it seems like this guide is more kindergarten and first grade. Has anyone used it for 2nd grade ? Would it be enough for 2nd grade?

I don't think it would be too easy for him as long as you kept him going with the right side of Beyond (except storytime).

You could also just keep going half speed except doing math daily.

That would be history, poetry, Bible, math, reading on one day and rotating box, Bible music, story time, math, LA on the second day.

The age ranges on the guides are a guideline, and if your child is a young 7 then it seems he would fit right into LHFHG. The level of work, length of attention span, and readiness are really key factors for those first few programs so if you see clearly that Beyond is too much for him and he needs to slow down, going to LHFHG might be a really good choice. Look over the placement chart with the experience of going through the first part of Beyond in mind. Keep in mind also, that a guide is always more intense and challenging at the beginning of it because you are both learning what is expected of you. They do get a lot easier once you are 4-5 weeks in. But if he clearly is not up to doing Beyond full speed then LHFHG or Beyond 1/2 speed until he shows more signs of being ready to go full speed are both good ways to approach it. As MomToJGJE mentioned, you can still do math and reading every day if you like. For the math in the guide, this would get you through math before you are done with the guide, in which case I think you would just move on to the next level of math as long as that was going well.

Also one of the tricky things in Beyond is that you are not expected to have the child copy the entire poem each week. Most people start off really slowly with it, as this is the first exposure to doing this kind of copywork. 1 line a day, or as much as can be done really well in 10 minutes. Focus on doing it well rather than how much is done. This was a big deal for us the first time around in Beyond because I thought she should be doing the whole poem, and I thought she could do the whole poem, but it was really hard and became quite a struggle.

Hi Bellamidon! Placement should be based primarily on the first page of the placement chart. Age is one consideration, but it does not outweigh the rest. Your ds is 7 yo, and as such could use happily LHFHG or Beyond. I think what would help us know better how to advise you would be if you could please share about your ds in regard to the first page of the placement chart. In regard to reading, what is he doing? How about his writing? Can he handle 10 spelling words? Can he copy a sentence or two? What has he done for math? All of that will help so much! Also, if you could share what about Beyond is too much for him - that would help us see if he just needs more time to grow into Beyond, or if it really is too much. You are wise to reflect on ds's proper placement, as this is an entire year of his life and of your life! A little reflection and consideration is so worthy of the time. We will definitely all chime in with more specific advice if you share a little more! Looking forward to hearing more about your sweet son.
