Singapore Math Version Question

Post by Tidbits of Learning » Wed May 21, 2014 11:25 am

My ds11 has dyslexia/dysgraphia. We chose to have him do his 3 R's using Calvert's Verticy Academy (designed for dyslexics) courses this year. He is doing Preparing for everything else except spelling, phonics, writing, and math. My big question is about Singapore Math in Focus. He is using MIF 3a/3b with Verticy as that is really where he places. He gets a math companion to go with it that has special helps for him with regards to his dyslexia and I am very impressed so far. The catch is that he will only complete through 6a/6b Math in Focus before high school. I am wondering if anyone knows if it is comparable to the way that Singapore Primary US Math transitions into Algebra 1 after 6a/6b?
I have thought about getting the workbooks from Primary Math to go through here and there alongside MIF to ensure he is ready for Algebra 1 by 9th grade. I am basically just wondering if anyone knows if they are comparable or if not where there would be gaps.

Tidbits,

The Singapore U.S. Edition ends after 6A/6B and then branches off into several different variations of follow-ups. Discovering Mathematics used to be the series that came after 6A/6B that was the closest to the U.S. Edition of Primary Math, but it has been rewritten to be Common Core Standard aligned and now has a totally new look and feel. The Discovering Mathematics edition is also going to be discontinued after 2014, and a new retitled series called Dimensions Math is taking its place only for 7A/7B and 8A/8B. From what I can tell at this point, the Dimensions Math is very similar to the Common Core changed version of Discovering Math. :D

What all of this means is that we are watching the changing at Singapore Math with interest. Our feeling is that the U.S. Edition of the Primary Math Series will train your child in mathematical and conceptual thinking that will be hugely helpful in whatever program he/she goes into after completing the series. If Math in Focus also ends at 6A/6B, then there probably isn't much reason to do Primary Math alongside Math in Focus, because either way you will be heading into a program change after 6A/6B. I wish that I had a firm answer for you at this point, but with the transitions and changes that continue to happen within the Singapore line-up at the middle school level, we are still waiting and watching ourselves! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you for your reply. It doesn't end at 6a/6b but goes through 8a/8b. We may just have to have a different plan for ds11. 7a-8b MIF has been compared to Discovering Mathematics though. It was roughly compared to Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 skills. Verticy also offers it through 8b for him. I want him to have the same opportunities as the other kids, but Algebra 1 just may not be realistic in 9th grade. I am really trying to focus on him mastering skills and moving at a pace that is comfortable for him where he is not frustrated or overwhelmed.
I really think that this is his path right now and I am trying to feel better at where he places and what is the best way to get him high school ready in the next 3-4 years. Thank you for your in-depth response as it is hard to follow all the different changes in Singapore Math. I am just going to aim for 7a-8b to be 9th grade math for him as Pre-Algebra. We are working at his pace and I just have to trust God that we will get there in the end. :)
