Sonlight vs. HOD

Sonlight vs. HOD

Post by meganlabouff » Tue Mar 11, 2014 7:26 am

I know there has to be a thread for this already somewhere. But I just wanted to some comparisons from the seasoned mommas on here. We are fairly new to homeschooling, this will be our 2nd year and we are planning on using HOD, in fact I already placed my order for Beyond :P We go to coop once a week and the moms there just rave on and on about Sonlight and how it's so amazing. I've done some looking at it, but HOD seems far more friendly. Anyway, we are coming from ABEKA, which we still plan to use their math, so this will be a new learning style for us, but I think it's desperately needed.

Please offer your input and/or post previous threads!

Thanks,
Meg

Here is a fairly recent one:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14855&p=104907&hili ... ht#p104907

The big things I have seen are:
HOD has less reading allowing you to really dig deep into a book. It also has more age appropriate school times in the younger grades.
HOD is more Christ-centered
HOD is more scripted and laid out. Sonlight most families have to decide what to do and what not to do because there is just too much listed to get done.

DS14 WG (completed LHFHG-MtMM plus some of LHTH)
DD13 MtMM (completed Rev2Rev)

I used Sonlight Core A for my oldest Kindergarten year (Core A, Science A, & LA A). Since I didn't understand Sonlight at the time I also had purchased P4/5 and P3/4 at the same time. We read a lot our first year of home schooling!

The reasons I didn't continue with Sonlight:

*Age appropriate books. You won't find World War II in Kindergarten in HOD (yes, that is in Core A), or stories that have a bit of gore for young children (The Steel man in P4/5). I ended up pulling 4 or 5 books out of core A for what I considered age inappropriate topics; the World War II being one of them. My oldest has since read those books, but at ages 9 and 10. I had to pull some out of P4/5 as well, and one or two out of P3/4. They introduce topics very young with a strong emotional content to pull children into the story. I happen to disagree with this choice, so it wasn't a good fit for our family.

*Lack of Biblical integrated history in Core B. In addition to the books mentioned above I didn't go onto Core B due to the lack of Biblical integrated history in Core B.

*I appreciate Sonlight's mission focus, but I wanted to do it a little older than Sonlight tends towards.

*I LOVE Carrie's book picks in her programs. We have many favorite SL books around the house, but our very favorite books are from Heart of Dakota. We didn't find the Christ centeredness in the Sonlight books. Sonlight advertises that they pick over 90% secular books with the idea the parents counteract the information in the books through teaching. In contrast HOD provides books I can about the Biblical teachings or character we see in the books. I find this to be much more effective in teaching a Biblical Worldview than trying to always tell them the reasons the facts in the book are untrue. I found the Sonlight method left my children thinking that God wasn't in science since I was always telling them in the science books that what was printed was inaccurate. So their conclusion was that science didn't have God in it. Since my oldest was so young that was very easy to undo and we have had many good discussions on God's creation and evolution since. It is an example though of how Sonlight works.

I hope that helps. Blessings for your decision.

Hi!

I totally agree with LovingJesus. But I also want to add some practical things. I don't know what ages your children are or how many you have.

I tried using SL so I could teach both my children the same things. The curriculum assistants told me that it would work, but it didn't. My oldest son could listen to me read all day, so he liked it. But he didn't retain much from 2+hours of read alouds. My other son is over 3 years younger plus he can't sit still for 20 minutes. I never ended up finishing Core B. We liked the books, but there was no guidance in creating character lessons or higher-level thinking skills through the discussion questions. The comprehension questions were much too easy for my 3rd grader and my kindergartener had been lost long before we got to the discussion anyway.

We did keep using the science, but I created my own history/Bible/social studies programs through FIAR. It was a lot of work researching my own period-specific reading materials for my then-4th grader to read independently. Plus he got bored reading the same book five days in a row. When my youngest got halfway through 2nd grade, I knew I needed to make a change so his history would have some continuity. We had already discovered R&S English by then.

HOD was a totally natural step. Everything I was trying to create myself through FIAR is already laid out and scripted for me. There are totally awesome books that the Charlotte Mason bookfinder doesn't list. I never would have found them myself! My younger one loves the activities, which left to myself, I would never do. SL suggested optional activities, but I was happy just to get all the boxes checked. I would never exercise the "option" to make a mess of any kind if I have a choice. When they're a scripted part of each day, it forces me to do them & my kids learn so much more.

Plus Carrie's guides help me have much more realistic expectations about what I can expect from my kids. When you're new to homeschooling (which every grade is new with your oldest), it's easy to expect adult-level attention spans, for example. I found SL not to be helpful at all in this regard. HOD guides make school so easy!

Trust your instincts. That's something God has been telling me personally. Maybe if your friends knew about HOD, they'd use it, too. But you're not alone anyway-- this board is wonderful! There is so much support. I don't believe you will find on the SL board your questions answered personally by the author of the curriculum. Plus there are many others who have helped answer my questions and have prayed for me & I've only been here 2 months!

God bless you, your family, and your homeschool!

Hi!
Because you all are familiar with Sonlight, I was hoping you might be able to help me. We have used Sonlight for 9 years but we are overwhelmed and tired. Running multiple cores did not work for our family. A friend called me last week and told me she is ordering HOD for her DD this year. I ordered a catalog and I really like the look of it. I like that character traits and the Bible are weaved throughout the day and are not separate subjects. I also like the time commitment a lot better.

But, I do have a few questions: Can I run 3 programs fairly easily or are we going to be pulling our hair out again? What happens from one program to the next? Do you do the same program 2 years in a row? My oldest will be in 11th grade. From what I understand, there is not a program for 11th and 12th?

This is what I was thinking, please tell me if I look like I'm on the right track and if this is plausible.

My family:

DD - 1 year old

Little Hearts for His Glory
DS- 5yrs. - K
DD- 6yrs - 1st

Preparing Hearts for His Glory
DS- 9yrs- 4th

Hearts for Him Through Time: Resurrection to Reformation
DS- 13yrs- 8th (struggling learner)

No program?
DS- 16yrs- 11th

Thanks for your help!
Blessings~ Tammy

Tammy, welcome to the HOD board!! ;) Glad to have you here! :)

You might get more responses to your questions if you start a new post about your specific placement questions. Others might not see it here as easily.

You look like you're coming to some great decisions for your family already. I will say that HOD can absolutely work when running 3 or more guides. With some planning and organization, it can work beautifully. We're running five guides at our house this year, and will next year too!

HOD does have a high school guide, World Geography, and Carrie is writing the next guide as we speak. It's going to be World History, and is due out this summer/fall. You can read some excellent sneak peek posts at the top of the board to give you more info about them. Please don't hesitate to ask as many questions as you need to, as this board is a great wealth of information.

Again......welcome! :D
