DITHOR question

Hi all,
I'm working on picking our our DITHOR books for this next year. I was wondering if it would work to pick a book like Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tale book and have my child read a different fairy tale each day (for the Folk Tale unit). I was also thinking of having my other child use Aesop's Fables. Would these work or do you need a book with a continuing story line?

It might be hard to answer some of the questions without the continuation of characters. I know in the older DITHOR you trace different things about the characters as you go through the book. Another thing I wanted to point out is that Aesop's Fables is read in I think Preparing.

We used a "collection of stories" book for our Mystery - it was Encyclopedia Brown. We made it work, but it was definitely harder to answer some of the questions and do some of the activities because of the short stories in it. Like one day she was supposed to make a prediction about how the problem would be solved. Well, since it was a whole story she read that day, there was nothing to predict, it was already solved. Probably 75% of the days the activity/questions were fine and the other 25% I had to lead a different discussion because it didn't really "work."

A continuing storyline is generally better to use with DITHOR, as it allows for character and plot development. The discussions are richer, as is the Godly character trait study. We have used both the HOD DITHOR Book Packages and the Sample Book Ideas list for book selections, and loved those! You may want to check those out for help in choosing. HTH!

A continuing story line is good to have. I'm not sure which level you're on, but the choices for level 2/3 are EXCELLENT!

Thank you all for the replies. For some reason, folk tales has been hard for me to figure out. I'd picked out all the other genres without too much trouble but folk tales ... Even with the book list from HOD and looking thru the catalog at all the book pack lists. ARGH!
Anyway, I finally settled on Whipping Boy for my 6th grader, Davy Crockett, His Own Story (a tall tale) for my 7th grader and King Arthur and His Knights by Pyle for my 10th grader.
If anyone has folk tales that aren't on the HOD booklist or in the catalog, I'd love to know them so I can write them down for later reference.
