Two Guides at Once/Not Combining Children ?

Post by glperky » Sat May 26, 2012 6:29 pm

This question comes from a spin-off of Amysue’s thread “What would you do? PLEASE!” I noticed that several people use two different guides for one child, such as the left side LHFHG while using the right side of Beyond. So, my question is, do you ever wind up doing one guide for that child or will they always be using two? If they wind up using one at some point, how does that work?

Yes, I think it's more common to use two guides in the lower grades. Once you get to higher guides you can go into one because there are multiple schedules written into the guide for math, reading, Language Arts, etc. I can't remember if it's Bigger or Preparing, since we don't follow HOD's math, but in one of those there are no longer daily activities corresponding with the math assignments, and you use both the workbook and the textbook-starting with level 3 Singapore. Beyond has the emerging readers schedule and questions. Once you're past that, you just place them in whatever level of DITHOR and don't need another guide for reading. Bigger has options in the back for spelling list or beginning dictation. By Preparing there are 3 different levels of dictation listed. So, I think it depends on where your kids are falling skill wise on these areas as to when you can quit flipping through different guides, but I would thing that for most that should for sure happen by Preparing. That's around the time there are optional extensions you can use for a kid who needs a little more filling in with some of the basics, as well.

We started off with HOD 3 years ago using 2 guides b/c my DS placed in Singapore 1B for math (in Beyond), but we were doing Bigger. Same thing happened when he went up to Preparing, but was in Bigger for math for awhile. Now his math (and everything else!) is in CTC and I am teaching it all from one guide. It was really not a big deal for me to teach from two guides for awhile. HTH!!! :D
