Placement help
Placement help
Hi, I am new to the board and exploring HOD for my son (10 1/2, struggling reader, hands on kind of guy) and daughter 12(auditory learner, ld due to epilepsy)...that being said this is my son's first year at home and it has been difficult at best to get the two of them together, which is my heart's desire. Bob Jones across the board for my son is a failure and ECC from MFW for daughter has dwindled to a co-op class once a week for an overview for both kids. We are currently doing a unit study in a Konos manual borrowed from a friend, I like untit studies but need a chronological order to make sure that the gaps are not too great. Bible is rolled in with this and LA, Reading and Math are individual. I like order to a certain degree so was drawn to HOD when making my original choices but many I knew were using ECC this year so I joined and did not like it, as I felt some of information above the kids abilities...very dry science...we just couldn't get into it and I found the format difficult to follow, many days not getting it all done. BJU was overwhelming to Adam, who is a mover and a shaker so I added him to ECC and he didn't like it either....the co-op offers a fun look at each country, very basic lots of hands on he loves and his sister hates. Isn't that the way! I am leaning towards BHFHG looking at abilities and how it builds....I do not want to make another investment that is not a good fit and I thought we could work on it together for remainder of the year and if Leah is not liking next school year I could move her up to Preparing...she has done quite a bit of American History but there is always knowledge to be gained, this year she is very reluctant to do much (?age, brother home now where it was just two of us for 2 years). I know Adam not ready for Preparing....they both need to be groomed for independent work slowly. Any advice would be appreciated especially from someone who uses with children that are struggling learners/ld. Thanks so much. Belinda
Re: Placement help
Welcome to the board, Belinda! From what you've shared, I think HOD would be such a wonderful fit for your family. It is inspiring, and it teaches skills in incremental steps, in short lesson format, and with all learning styles well represented. I am thinking you could do Bigger Hearts with the 2 of them, but I would love for you to check out the first page of the placement chart, with each of your dc individually in mind, and share where you think they place best according the reading/writing/math/grammar columns on the placement chart. This will help us give more specific advice that is tailored to your family...

We have many, many families using HOD with dc who may be struggling learners, and they have found it to work well. I know they will share when they get the chance, but just know you are joined by many others here. I look forward to getting to know you here - this is a very encouraging board. I like to come here often.
In Christ,
Julie

Re: Placement help
Hi Julie, thanks for the encouragement! I have been looking over the charts and we are pretty settled with our math and language arts right now so I would stick with them for remainder of the year. I did notice a post about placement that I intend to look at tonight....will prayerfully re-visit charts as well thanks again. Belinda
