Super great thread! We are just starting 1B and dealing with the lingo issue. I will be trying the "donut" thingy too!
I also wanted to add, after really struggling through addition/subtraction in 1A with my ds (7yo) this school year, he completed the final review almost completely by himself. I was floored! We did have to work through that last "16 chairs at a party" question mentioned above. It took me awhile to figure out how to explain it! The addition and subtraction problems that provoked tears all throughout the book he was able to do by himself in the final review. (I actually left the room to grab some tea and he dove in and did the work while I was out of the room...maybe that should be a hint to me to get out of the way!)
What I was going to mention is that we happen to have the Textbook for 1B from another family and it has really helped so far in going though 1B to have it explain the concept in Singapore lingo a few more times before doing the work in the workbook. We still do Carrie's hands on as scheduled, but I supplement with the Textbook and we are both really liking it. If I had to do 1A over again, I would supplement with the textbook.
