It just seems like, in my mind that it would be easier in the long run to seperate them now since we just got started on this journey instead of trying to figure out later had to split them or change so much to make it easier for him. I have only been at this for 10-11 weeks, so I really don't know.


If you aren't sure, I wouldn't separate until you are. I tend to think if things are going well--keep going! You can always change paths down the road if needed. However, that is me. You are the mom. You know your family dynamics, the motor skills issues, etc. Disclaimer: I am a fan of combining. It is the only way I get everyone taught. I tried separating once, and it was overwhelming to me keeping track of everyone's stuff and switching from this time period to that one. Each family is different. Good luck deciding! I do still have to run 2 guides due to a large age range. I have my 5th, 6th and 9th (with extensions) in one and the K and 2nd in another. I also have a senior who has not used HOD.

Thank you Melissa for this encouragement. Do you mind sharing with me what Beyond looks like for your K? This might help ease my mind some more.

Sure, glperky. Emma (K) listens to all of the Beyond readings and enjoys the crafts and science experiments. She is doing Explode the Code and reading small books to me. She is my 7th child, so I have taught phonics several times. I really don't use a curriculum per se anymore. I just teach her the sounds as we go. She is also doing the SM (the old K B book). Next year she will continue with the phonics until she is ready for the emerging readers, and she will continue on in math and start spelling. In some ways as you progress, it would be like using the left side of the older guide (history) with the right side of a younger guide (language, math). They love being together, and it works. It is the perfect amount of work for both. The older one is doing the spelling list B and dictation out of the Bigger guide (I know you are only supposed to be doing one, but this is what is working for this particular child.) She can handle R & S 2 and is using SM 2A right now. Hope that helps.

Thanks Melissa, that does help! I guess I am such a rule follower and a do it by the book kinda gal, it's hard for me to see beyond the pages and what's written there.
