It sounds like you have a super placement! In response to your question about subbing the extension books for the Storytime books, I don't think I would do that. Carrie uses a different criteria to choose read aloud books for Storytime than she does to choose independent reading books for extensions. The extensions reading will get long, and are not chose for their read aloud capability. On the other hand, the Storytime books are chosen for this purpose and are time conscious as well. The reading level for the Storytime books is chosen for the students to be able to do the follow-up skills assigned in the Storytime box well. These skills were key in teaching my dc necessary skills to begin PHFHG the following year. Here are the skills taught within the Storytime plans...
*Day 1: introduce and study different types of literature
*Day 2: model narration to foster comprehension
*Day 3: identify and analyze a different story element for each genre
*Day 4: relate personally to one Godly character trait, compare Biblical and book characters, and make a bookmark as a
reminder of the trait
*Day 5: practice narration by retelling the story
The plans for DITHOR and Storytime in BHFHG are intentional, and they gave our dc such a strong academic base in LA. Here is a link to Carrie's explanation of BHFHG's balance of plans in DITHOR and Storytime...
Why do DITHOR when doing BHFHG?

We actually do get the extensions from every guide eventually, and I let my dc read them as they are mature enough, so perhaps your ds could enjoy them that way when he is read to ready them independently. That is just a thought! HTH!
