Field trips
Field trips
I am wondering about possible field trip ideas that go along with Beyond. Thanks!
Re: Field trips
Anything Pilgrim related Wish we could have made it up to Boston because there are a lot of things mentioned that are there as well like the Golden Grasshopper. We looked it up online, but how cool it would have been to see it! Also anything that coincides with the Revolutionary War and the beginnings of Independence. I would love to have also taken my daughter to see Mt. Vernon.

Re: Field trips
Don't know where you live but we are St. Augustine, FL (oldest city) so we gets LOTS of cool field trips locally. And Beyond does the whole first unit on how St. Augustine was founded. It was lots of fun to actually visit the places we talked about in history.
I agree with pp, anything related to colonial living or the pilgrims would go well. If you don't have anything local, make up something to do at home. One year for LHTH, when we got to the miracles of Jesus and talked about the wedding at Cana we had a wedding feast and invited some of our friends over. We decorated the house and all got dressed up. It was a blast!

Re: Field trips
I do not know what state you are in, but try doing a google search for Revolutionary war reenactments. Even if you don't want to witness "the battle" walking around the camps and vendors and the battle sites would be a great field trip. Most of the in "costume" reenactors will talk to your children. They'll be "in period" like it is you that went back in time! LOL. Good place to find period music and little toys. Also, there may be historic homesites with museums nearby you..?
You could have a field trip in your own backyard... plant a garden with heirloom seeds that the pilgrims might have used. Talk about where the seeds originated from- the seed catalogs usually say where. Then you can discuss the hardships (no doubt) of bugs and lack of rain. LOL find some old recipes that the pilgrims might have used?

Re: Field trips
Anything colonial or prior would be great. A great deal of time is spent on the Pilgrim experience. In Bigger, you spend a lot more time in the colonial and pioneer times than in Beyond.

We live near the Gulf of Mexico and were able to visit the Tall Ships when in port. One of the Tall Ships was operated by a homeschooling family. It was a fun day!
Re: Field trips
St. Augustine is a great place to visit. Since you're in south GA, how about Savannah and Charleston?

I don't know how far you are willing to travel, but The American Village is in Montevallo, AL (which is approx a 4 hour drive from Albany, GA). They have lots of different shows, activities, and re-enactments for all age groups. They have different things going on at different times during the year so you could call them for a schedule and plan one that will be during or shortly after a particular Beyond unit. We have been twice, and both times were completely different experiences, yet equally great.

I am close to Albany...that is a wonderful idea! I had not heard of that before, but I will be looking into it! Thank you for the suggestion.
