Online math games, helpful or not?

Post by KristinBeth » Sat Mar 10, 2012 9:50 am

We are using Singapore Earlybird Math right now, and it is going well. :) I noticed a sale for an online math games subscription today. I'm wondering, do these sorts of games help or get in the way if using Singapore Math? Right now it's pretty basic, but I understand their teaching methods are different in upcoming years. I don't want to sign up for something that is going to make learning the Singapore way more difficult, but math games in general sounded like a good idea.

I think it would be a great idea. Rarely do online math game sites actually TEACH the concept. It usually is just fun practice of skills they already have learned. Your dc will be able to use the Singapore way to think about how to solve the problem regardless of the format. One criticism of Singapore is that it doesn't provide as much drill as other programs. We've never found that to be a problem as my ds is very mathy. Singapore does provide additional practice books if needed. But online math games provide a fun way to practice skills. I'd say, go for it and see how your child takes to them.
