Looking into LHTH - have ???s

Post by edsnyder » Sat Jan 07, 2012 5:01 pm

Hi!

I am looking at LHTH for my dd2 will be almost 3 when we start this - but if by some chance we actually finish this in a yr then what? she would be to young for LHFHG, so would I just spread it out over two years or do it again at 4yo? I saw that there was different resources to use for the older kids so I didn't know if it would be terrible to repeat it using some of the other texts....

Any thoughts, insight would be very much appreciated - she has two older brothers and wants to do school to - I have been giving her activities to do - but she seems to crave more.

Thanks!

I think it would depend on your daughter. :) You could go half-speed and only do half of each Unit at a time, which would be particularly beneficial if your daughter has a short attention span. Or you could go full speed and go through it a second time when she's 4, using the older child choices, perhaps adding some handwriting or phonics if your child was ready at that point. I did LHTH with my daughters when they were 4 and 2. My 4 year old already knew all the letter sounds, numbers and colors/shapes, so it was just review - and I realize I could have done it sooner. But she very much enjoyed the Bible, music, fingerplays, and Bible related dramatizations and crafts, we added The Reading Lesson, and my ddd was well-prepared to start Little Hearts when she turned 5. I'll go through LHTH again with my younger when she is closer to 4.

You could also take your time by just doing LHTH three days a week, or some other alternate schedule to slow it down.

I will probably just repeat what KristinBeth said. Your choices are to go 1/2 speed with LHTH, meaning you take 2 weeks to do a unit. Do 1/2 of the page each day, or just do it 3 days a week or so. I really liked having a 3 day a week preschool schedule, it didn't overwhelm me or them. Otherwise you could repeat it again with the older child options, or add in some of LHFHG the 2nd time you do it.

Or you can make LHFHG take 2 years by doing it 1/2 speed or by repeating it with 1st grade options the 2nd time. I would lean towards doing it 1/2 speed, because I don't know if I would want to repeat the history readings and storytime readings and activities two years in a row. I bet the child wouldn't have any problem with it, but I think it would be a bit dull for me. You could do 1/2 speed on those things and full speed on phonics, writing, and math if you want to move ahead in those things, doing K options one year and 1st grade options the 2nd year. The thing is, these guides aren't really meant to be for a certain grade. So if your little girl did LHTH and LHFHG and did well with them, she would move on to Beyond LHFHG. I only used the K options in LHFHG and moved on to Beyond, the same things get covered in different ways there so you don't really miss anything.

Also in answer to another question, I think 4 is a little young to start LHFHG. There are some very bright 4YOs out there who can probably do a lot of it, but I think even if they are really good at reading and writing, the comprehension, and just the maturity and attention required to do that much schoolwork is probably too much for one that young. Keep it light and easy.

I did LHTH twice with my oldest DD. The second time around, I added in some phonics, a few supplemental workbooks and did the older options in the TM when applicable. I also purchased the older version bible and devotional to change it up a bit. She loved it both times. I have also heard of people using the Rod and Staff ABC books that are recommended as K options in LHFHG along with LHTH the second time around and then when you get to LHFHG, you use the 1st grade option stuff.
