Resurrection to Reformation Unit 3
My son finished Peril and Peace this week. (EDIT Whoops! I misunderstood and thought my son was done with Peril and Peace when actually they just took a detour for a little bit. He is back to it now in Unit 5.) He seemed to enjoy it and is looking forward to what is coming next. Here are a few pictures of his History project, Science notebooking, timeline, and Shakespeare page.
Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 3
My daughter is showing great interest in her reading assignments. She is such a self motivator, it is a joy to teach her sometimes. Here is a picture of her Draw & Write copywork so far this year, History project, and Draw & Write drawings. She was so thrilled with how her mammoth turned out and I am thrilled with her handwriting this year. Having her do Cheerful Cursive last year really paid off.

Preparing unit 2 (1/2 pace)
The highlight of this week for ds was to do his science experiment and he had a blast! He was to find 2 ways to melt an ice cube, the first in a cup and the second was to be a quicker melting process. Since Daddy was working outside at the time, he enjoyed this experiment with him and ended up explaining more to him about different things that control the outcome, such as the spade leaning back and all the water draining, keeping the ice on the hot surface at all times and not in a puddle of cool water. For the first trial he choose to put a cup in the sun, for the second ice cube one he decided to do 3 different surfaces at the same time. Glad he used more than 1 color on his science lab sheet:D
This week ds learned to draw a giraffe for Independent History and we went ahead and colored since we have next week off! I had ds trace it first on tracing paper, than go back and draw it on computer paper.
His cursive is improving steadily. Such a difference with last year, when he was not completely ready to learn cursive. We love "Cheerful Cursive". This goes to show, that when a child does not do well with a particular program we should not be too quick to disregard the program. Instead of switching, prayerfully considering what to do is the way to go. Than resting in what you believe you heard the Lord say. In this case, it was wait a year and return, now we are off to smooth sailing.
Little Hearts For His Glory unit 20
Ds is enjoying his new Story time book: "Chatterer the Red Squirrel". I absolutely love the way Carrie works on handwriting, language art and creativity doing these activities, brilliance
He is doing very well with his handwriting and actually keeps up wonderful with the scheduled amount of pages. Ds tends to be a perfectionist to his detriment, but I've noticed that he is relaxing a bit more and is beginning to realize that he needs to give himself time to learn, without purposely being sloppy
His highlight was that we used homemade instruments to do repeat patterns and he was sure to give me some as well at the end. He loves taking the role of teacher, which shows great that he understood the activity. I was a bit daring to use two glass lids as my percussion instrument, but all went well, phew!
This was done as a science experiment, that was drawn from a history story about how a servant found his master who was captured in a castle, by using sound to find him. They sang a song back and forth that only the two of them knew.
Our house is fairly small so we can not have one listening to music out loud while the others are doing school. I gave the kids earphones, and it was perfect talking about the ear and how it can get damaged when we make loud noises. We keep if very soft and the kids see the earphones as a special treat!
Ds continues to enjoy doing reading with TRL. We started at the end of the summer and his reading has quickly become more fluent in the last couple of weeks. He was super excited to finish his math book. We started LHFHG later in the school year so we had to finish 2B. I took the time to review the concept of skip counting last week. Now he has a skip and a bounce along with going all the way up 100 counting by 5's.
Little Hands to Heaven unit 3
Abraham's promise of descendants as many as the stars is visualized in this great craft, this after we acted it out as a dramatic play.
Dd enjoyed her activity this week setting up 3 stuffed animals for a meal so much. and so did I. Just like the 3 men from heaven who visited Abraham. She did so good, keeping all the colors together all on her own. Just so neat how different kids there creativity shows. She had so much fun, that she and ds2 continued to play this for at least and hour.
Learning how the letter c is written. We used C-C- "Candyland" Cards and c-c-cup cake stickers. We used window markers to write the the letter this week. She did great finding all the c's, counting them and she always wants to practice writing so we just flip the paper and make a couple of letters and she's satisfied. Instead of using a car to ride on her letter, she used her "My Pony".
We had to make tents for our Count on Me page and dd said: "Oh, Mom it looks like a V". (up-side down, I quickly added) She wants to learn to write her numbers as well, so she tries or copies mine for the ones she does not know. On her number 3 page she cut out 3 travel bags and is learning to write the number 3.

Hello everyone!
I have had a really rough time letting go of summer and getting in the full swing of doing school again..hence the reason for my terrible slack on weekly check-ins. I am trying to do better...but I am going to have to build back up to taking lots of pictures! It seems I lost a ton of opportunities this week!
Bigger Hearts for His Glory
ds8 finished up Unit 4, Day 4 this week. We have been reading about the early sailors and have begun to learn about some of the first settlers. In Science, we are studying the seashore and doing lots of notebooking and experiment write-ups which are new to my youngest son. He is doing great with them, though. Here is some of his work:
Math w/Singapore 2A
We are learning cursive this year. We are really enjoying Cheerful Cursive.
Science Notebooking:
Science Experiment Sheet:
History Artwork - an Indian Blanket.
Eating away the continents..
Vocabulary Cards. He does one with all writing and drawing himself. I write out the other two as he finds the definition and makes up the sentence for me. Then he draws the pictures. My goal is to have him doing all three by the end of the year.
His timeline is getting started. He does the pictures, I do the writing.
And some Poetry copywork:

Resurrection to Reformation
ds12 is having a great year so far. He is definitely in his groove now and his school days usually end by 1pm or earlier. He knows how HOD works this year and it was so easy for him to go right on to this next level.
We are attempting a 5 day a week plan with RTR so we can move up a little sooner (since he is behind in the guides and wants to get through them all). For now, this is the first actual week he has done 5 full days of school. He finished up Unit 5, Day 1 today. I can already tell it is going to be really hard for me to figure out what exactly he did each week, so I am going to just try to show some samples and not try to remember the Unit and Day it was from. I hope that doesn't confuse anyone! Most of the work here is from Unit 4.
Here is some of his work:
A super fun game called "Race to Rome." ds12 won and ds8 made him play again so HE could win! LOL
Hand made "parchment" with a bible verse in Hebrew and English.
Student pages - Unit 4 (I think)
Ds is really enjoying Shakespeare. He love to do the artwork too - he really takes his time and works hard on these.
Notebooking about the Volcanos on Venus
And his favorite of the week - making his own "volcano" and seeing the ridges created by the "lava" (hot butter on flour)
Lab sheet for the volcano experiment
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and a blessed week to come!

Re: Week In Review Aug.22,2011 to Aug.26,2011
I'm late posting, but thanks for the posts everyone! It's fun to see what others are doing.
We started unit 6 of Beyond this week. I have to say, 6 weeks in, we are starting to lose a little bit of our enthusiasm. Don't get me wrong, we are still having a great time and learning a lot! But now instead of "aww Mom, aren't we going to do school today?" Sometimes I get "Mom, do we have to?" But for the most part, I think the routine we have created helps everyone just do it and get it done, including myself!
Handwriting/copywork was a problem for us in weeks past and since I have slowed down on how much I am requiring my 6YO to do, it has gotten a lot better. She loves spelling words so I don't have trouble getting her to write those down, she always wants to write the full sentences. This week's, with short vowel sounds mixed and all of the words had double consonants at the end, she still did great. She has amazed me with how well she's doing (I accidentally started using list 2 instead of list 1 but I have continued on with it since she's doing so well!) I have seen the quality of her handwriting work improve a lot even in these few short weeks.
I have appreciated the advice I've seen and been given on this board. We are reading "Three Tales of My Father's Dragon" for our adventure storytime selection and it has been just perfect for both DD6 and DD4. They are loving it, and the activities/discussion/narration really help them remember the story. DD6 is starting to get the hang of narration, though I do still have to guide or help her a lot of the time, she's really growing and I can see it. I appreciate my husband too, for he is so good at asking the girls about their school day and in that way they end up narrating it again for him at dinner time.
DD4 struggled with her learning to read lessons this week. She is a very emotional girl so when she doesn't get something right the first time she gets upset very easily. She is tagging along in Beyond with storytime, history, crafts/science and she's learned a lot from that, but she was so excited to learn to read, now that it's getting hard her attitude has changed. But by God's grace we were able to turn it around a bit by the end of this week. I slowed down with what I was having her do, and have tried to be very gentle, positive and encouraging with her. This is difficult for me sometimes. But she started doing better and I really hope we can somehow start working through this being so hard on herself or giving up easily. I know she's only 4, I really do need God's wisdom to decide whether to push her a little bit or just wait. But I think she has shown that she's ready and capable (she was reading CVC words at 3 but we stopped any reading instruction because of this same problem at that time, and also at that time I realised she just wasn't ready).
My DD2 - who isn't officially doing any school this year - has shown herself to be picking up on our stuff pretty well anyway! She started joining some of the worship singing we do each day, and then when we were reviewing our verse from unit 1, Psalm 4:8 "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." my 2YO said the first phrase of it perfectly! That girl is so verbal! I plan to do LHTH with her next fall, and I'm sure she will be more than ready.

Mel,
My daughter who is also 4 (5 in Dec) was so excited to learn how to read. We just had a baby and she wanted to read to her brother . We started Hooked on Phonics and after the 2nd lesson she gave up . We haven't picked it back up yet. I am giving her a few more weeks to gain some confidence in her own abilities. She is getting better at her letter sounds, and is feeling more secure. Hopefully we can pick it up in a month or so. I'll keep an eye out for your week in review posts to see how your dd does. It's nice to know someone else is in the same boat.

I have a bunch of pictures from this summer, but each week I just didn't seem to get them posted. I plan on posting them, but for now I just had to share the activity Big J did yesterday in Beyond. He was to make the armor of God and "dress" a stuffed animal with it. What a cute project! The boys had great fun (little brother is always hanging around - a great testament to Beyond since he is only 4 1/2). Here are a couple of pictures.

That's adorable! He did a great job with the armor of God! I suppose we'll be doing that project at some point too.
rogmisbailey thanks for sharing! This is our 5th week and up until last week she was doing very well! I am using "Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" but I am thinking about also buying The Reading Lesson because of some of the things I have read about it. I think we will try to keep going for now and I will certainly share how the Lord works in us both.

I have been having the hardest time getting into a steady stride and so haven't been checking in on or contributing to the weekly check ins. I am now wishing I had at least been looking because WOW! Those notebook pages are GORGEOUS! Besides that, all these posts are so inspiring.

OOPS! I'm really late! I forgot to post because we have friends staying with us. I love looking at all the great work your kids have all been doing!
We just finished LHTH. Here are our last couple of projects (sniff sniff)...
The girls made 'tongues of fire' out of painted paper plates. Here they are re-enacting the Holy Spirit arriving at Pentecost (whoosh!)
And we made a craft of Peter in prison before the angel freed him. Uhhh...pardon my cartooning...I didn't do it exactly as written in the guide but improvised a bit with what we had on hand.
We really enjoyed our journey through LHTH and will enjoy it again in another year when we go through it again with my younger daughter!
