Hi. We are new to HOD(using Bigger) and for the storytime box(our read alouds)..we are finishing the book way earlier than the guide suggests. Do any of you have this problem? What do you do? We have finished 2 Biographies already and there is still more biography to go so we will end up reading 3 biographies instead of just one. We love reading and slowing down isn't really an option for us, we like to keep reading. Is there any harm in reading more books per genre than the guide suggests? Thankyou.

we used to do that too. But we don't have as much time to read as we used too these days.

Re: finishing books too quickly for storytime box
We have this problem especially if the book has less chapters. I hate stopping in the middle of the chapter so it's difficult for me to discipline myself to stop even if I know that is where I'm supposed to unless it's at the end of a chapter. So I try to choose longer books ideally with 20 chapters. That works out perfectly for us to read one chapter a day and I can usually muster up enough strength to stop after one chapter. I think if you are reading more books per genre than recommended for storytime, it doesn't work out quite as well with the plans and the depth of study that is intended. Some of the activities that are done make more sense done on just one book than several.I know the CM idea is to savor the books rather than devour them so I guess reading too fast is against the CM philosophy. I think the idea there is that when you live with the book for a longer period of time, it sinks in a bit deeper and stays with you longer. Kind of like the difference between gulping down a cheeseburger on the run and enjoying a nice steak slowly. One is nourishing but the other is more of an experience. I understand the dilemma though. We love the books here too and don't want to stop reading. It's so difficult when they are so good!

Re: finishing books too quickly for storytime box
Because of the philosophy behind taking the books slowly in small sections, I divide the book up into 20 sections before we even get started and stick to that. However, we read a lot of the books in the lists we don't choose for the guide just for fun, and we read those at whatever pace we want. That helps us be disciplined with the guide.

I also mark out our books ahead of time with little sticky notes. We read at our own pace for not school books, but we do what the guide says for school stuff.
Except right now for Mystery. We are reading Encyclopedia Brown and it is 10 chapters with a little "how'd he do it" thing at the end. So I'm just reading a chapter every other day and doing the boxes as scheduled.
