History for Little Pilgrims in Little Hearts questions

for some reason I thought that Little Hearts did world history but I have since realized that it is Bible History, reformation, and then some American History. I learned this from reviews of the History of Little Pilgrims elsewhere.

Can anyone share more details with me as I don't have the book.

also, a reviewer at that site said that the abraham and isaac story was handled poorly and her son was terrified.
What did you think of that story/chapter?
and also that the coloring book (I know it is not sold on HOD I don't think) has a picture of someone burning in a fire and looking happy. I don't think I'd want my child coloring a picture like that so I'm wondering what else is in the text that may be a bit inappropriate for a 5 or 6 yr old.

You can take a look at what is covered by looking at the table of contents in the introduction here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/little ... -intro.pdf It is an overview of world history through the framework of the Bible. LHFHG also uses History Stories for Children so that fills in any gaps that History for Little Pilgrims might have. It's a good overview of "His Story" from the beginning of time until now. I don't remember the story of Abraham and Isaac being that scary. In general that is a difficult topic, but I don't recall having any reservations at all when we studied it. My dc were 6 at the time. We did use the coloring book also and I don't recall any pictures being offensive or scary. If there is a picture of someone in a fire, I'm guessing it probably goes with the story of the 3 Hebrew children in the fire so you can understand why they are happy. I don't consider my dc overly sensitive, but they are sensitive and we didn't have any problems. You can always look ahead at these sections, see if you think it would be a problem for your dc and adjust accordingly. The guides have been written to be age appropriate and Carrie is always good about pointing out things that might be a little much for sensitive children.

We are about 2/3 of the way through LHFHG and so far there hasn't been anything that I have found difficult. Nor has there been anything that my 6yo has found difficult.

thank you... I'd like to hear more from others. but I'm guessing that maybe the reviewer I had read was misunderstanding it maybe?

I've heard that there is a "protestant slant" to the book. Has anyone found that offensive or inaccurate?

This is refering to a section about Christianity in the Roman Empire, specifically a story about Polycarp refusing to turn away from Christ, and how he was burned and died for his faith. There is a note in the guide for that day that says "You may want to omit this story". That was enough heads up for me to pre-read the story and be prepared. My kids were fine with it, but we already talk about the persecution that happens to Christians, both abroad and in less violent ways here in the US. And we didn't find the story of Abraham and Isaac to be any different than other versions we've read. It's a fantastic example of faith in God, for Abraham to both obey God and believe that God would somehow save Isaac, in order to fulfill His promise to bless the earth through Abraham's son. HTH

I disagree that it was handled poorly. The topic of Abraham and Isaac (assuming you are referring to God asking Abram to prepare a sacrifice) is covered in two short paragraphs that only gives the briefest of attention to the event.

"God, however, asked Abraham to do something that was very hard to do. When Isaac was a little boy, God told Abraham to take him and go to a mountain called Moriah. There God told him to stack a pile of stones and place Isaac on the stones as a sacrifice! (Read Genesis 22:1-19). A sacrifice is an animal that is killed to pay for the sins of the people.

Since God told Abraham that the great promise would come through his family line, how could Abraham sacrifice Isaac, his beloved son? The Bible says that, by faith, Abraham believed that God would raise Isaac from the dead! (Read Hebrews 11:17-19.) Because of Abraham's faith, he became the father of everyone who truly trusts in God."

Then, the next paragraph tells how God sent Jesus to be a sacrifice for sin and that's all there is to the story. You could just skip it if you wanted to. Little Hearts is MUCH more than just this one story. I haven't seen the coloring book. The book is written from a Reformed Protestant perspective. We are Protestant but we are not Reformed (i.e. we are not Calvinists) and we enjoyed the book. We used the coverage on Calvin to explain why we disagree with his doctrine and it in no way took away from our enjoyment of Little Hearts.

to DHT1999: were you quoting the actual book? wow- the children's Bible's don't explain it that well. That makes it seem not so scary to me. I guess I should disregard some reviewers sentiments.

I have used LHFHG twice now. Both times we used the coloring books along with the history book. My children were 6 and 4 the first time through and they had no problem with the discussion about Polycarp. We did color the picture of him being burned at the stake. He is not smiling in the picture by the way, he is looking to the sky and Praying. I had to dig out the coloring book to check because that reviewer's words made me wonder what I had done .... I will be using this program again in a few years and I will purchase the coloring book again. I personally learned so much from that history text that I never learned in Sunday School. I can't wait to go through it again.
