Bigger/Preparing

Post by StephanieF » Sun May 01, 2011 1:41 am

Following on from my previous thread about the dictation in Bigger which I don't think will be challenging enough for ds, does anyone use Preparing along with Bigger?

I would need Preparing for the dictation only although we would use R&S3 too. Should I source dictation elsewhere?
Does anyone add anything else from Preparing to Bigger like the poetry to make having the guide more worthwhile. I'm not sure if ds will still be at home the following yr, if he is then I can use Preparing for his grade 4 yr so it maybe that I don't want to do too much from Preparing for grade 3.

Thanks
Stephanie

If your ds needs the next level of dictation, PHFHG would be good to use. The dictation is all part of a series that follows a set plan for teaching dictation that builds from year to year. R & S English 3's schedule is also a part of PHFHG, which would be convenient, as are the different levels of math. I personally would get the PHFHG guide to have the proper levels for LA and math, but like you said I wouldn't use the other portions of it as ds could then fully use the rest for Grade 4. I am not certain what you shared on your other thread about dictation, but if your ds has not had dictation before, I will say that we found it to be harder than it looked. My ds surprised me by missing some things I thought he really had nailed down. If your ds has not tried the dictation in Bigger Hearts yet, it would be worth a try to see how he does. Also, you can begin dictation in the middle of the Level as well, if that is where placement is more befitting. You will know what will be the best placement for your ds, but that has been my experience. HTH!

"We found it to be harder than it looked"

Thank you, Julie. I didn't ask the original question, but that eases my mind.
