Language Arts in Beyond

Post by GinainMD » Wed Sep 22, 2010 12:07 pm

Hello to all! Since my dd8 is on the older side for Beyond, we have been using R&S 2. I am wanting to know if she should still do the language arts found in the Beyond guide. Not the spelling but for instance in unit 2 day 5 run on sentences are covered. I know that is covered in R&S also. I'm not necessarily opposed to covering it more than once just wanted to hear from some others who have done Beyond. Right now, only week 3 for us, school is taking quite a while, so if it isn't needed we could shave off a little time. TIA

I would not do both. Just consider yourself as doing LA from Bigger Hearts instead. We considered this for my 7year old, but decided to just use the plans in Beyond instead as his gentle intro to grammar. :) I am sure others will weigh in as well, but this is my thought. :)

Thanks for the reply. So, if dd8 was in Bigger R&S would be her LA?

I am in a very similar situation as you are! :D Two of my children are doing Beyond together. The older one is 8 1/2 and the younger one is six almost seven. We are also doing R&S 2 with my older one and he just joins in with his little sister for the language/spelling box. On the day that the language concepts are taught we just do them together. It only takes a few minutes and I figure it just helps him to "cement" those skills in his mind. He doesn't even notice he's doing any "extra" language because it's just part of our Beyond time and they both do it.

I hope this helps in some way! :D

In Christ,

Lisa

I'm doing Beyond with my 8 and 6 year olds. With my 8 year old I'm doing R & S English 2 and don't do what's in the Beyond manual with him. With my dd who is 6, I am also not doing what's in the beyond manual. I will do that with her next year when she is 7. Just my preference for introducing grammar. I feel like my 8 year old is getting plenty in R & S. HTH!

Yes, R&S English 2 is scheduled daily in Bigger Hearts. :)

Hi Gina, when my dd was in Beyond last year, she did Rod and Staff Grammer, omitting the language arts stuff in Beyond except for the spelling. She did the spelling list #2.

I have a DS using Beyond and a DD using Beyond (with Bigger for 3Rs). DD does not do the grammar lesson on day 5. I do follow the spelling (list 2) and copywork parts.

Thank you all for your responses! I have been doing the spelling list 2 with both girls and R&S 2 with both girls. We ARE also, so far, doing the grammar on day 5 but I'm not sure whether or not I'll continue with that or not. I guess if it gets to be too much we can certainly forgo that part. Thanks again I feel much better hearing other options.

Gina,

If you are using Rod and Staff 2 with Beyond, then you would not need to do the grammar lesson from Beyond on Day 5 as you will already have that covered in Rod and Staff. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
