Dictation

Post by blessedmomof4 » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:38 pm

So, from reading a previous post on the board, I learned that for nearly an entire guide I have been doing dictation wrong! Well, just one instruction escaped me- dictate a phrase then "have the child repeat it back" then have her write...My daughter is doing level 4, the highest included in Preparing, and is at number 47. Doing dictation without her repeating back the phrase, she generally either gets everything right, or has to repeat the passage the next day. This time I did it the right way, and she is repeating the passage again tomorrow, because although she repeated the last phrase correctly, she wrote it down missing two words  I guess that's okay, right? Looks like mom has to learn to read and follow directions...

Lourdes, I just discovered this myself this year too! I had read the directions previously and missed that part somehow. We're all learning, aren't we? Don't feel too bad...It is interesting how repeating it changes things, and doesn't necessarily mean the dc will write it down correctly. This is one reason I really like dictation...it is helping hone those listening skills as well!

I forgot this step too, and I helped research the steps. We're not perfect - it's alright, but I am glad we're doing it right now. My ds started repeating it out loud this year, and I can see he writes more fluidly now. I also see him benefiting from reading his written narrations out loud too, another step I forgot at first. My youngest ds will surely have the best education of all, as by then, I hopefully will have it all down just right. :D

I feel like EVERY DAY I discover one more new thing in the guide to apply to our learning experience. :D And I've read through the guides multiple times. It just goes to show you that you can only take in so much information at a time.

I agree! There are many wonderful tidbits wound within the lessons and directions for the assignments. Sometimes I gloss over them too, only to later remember that I should be doing a certain step. Luckily we have the board to guide us in refocusing us if we do happen to have missed something. :D

It's a good reminder for me how to do the various parts of each guide as we visit about them on the board too! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
