What to do after 100 Easy Lessons?

My 5 yo DD is on Lesson 60 something in Teach your child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. She is doing great and I am so proud of her! Just last night she picked up a Level 1 reader (Jack & Jill & big Dog Bill) and read through it and was so proud of herself!

I am trying to look ahead and realize she will be finishing it in a few weeks. What do I do for phonics and reading then? I do have Abeka Handbook for Reading with the phonics stuff that I got from a thrift store but don't have a workbook or anything for it.

We have several Level one readers and a couple of big Dick and Jane books; I'm thinking she would fly through Dick & Jane. We have a good library system that I could borrow books through too. I was looking at Level One readers at the library today though and realize there is a big difference in the "level" on some of them....

DD #1 is using the Emerging Readers from Beyond but there is no way that DD #2 is ready for those and I want to use those with her next year for 1st grade when we are doing Beyond.

Wow! Good for you and for her! Supposedly when you are finished 100 Easy Lessons your child should be reading at a 2nd Grade level! Here in our household I have found that my children will read it IF it interested them! Here are some book ideas that my children read after finishing 100 Easy Lessons:

Billy & Blaze Series by Anderson. Short text & gorgeous pictures!
Big Book of Berenstain Bears & The Big Book of Science & Nature
Little Bear Series
Some silly books like: Are you my Mother? & Flap Your Wings by P.D. Eastman

Hmmm.... I'm seeing a animal theme appear! Well, so far, my readers have all been boys....

Have lots of fun! My children all love it when they read a page & then I read a page and it's such sweet time to give them individualized attention and snuggles!

We are doing the Emerging Reader set in HOD. I also take her to the library and she picks out what she likes. We finished 100 Easy Lessons in May. I just did one of those online tests for reading levels. She tested at a 4th grade level! I couldn't believe it. We also added in the Bob books and Explode the Code. She just loves to read now. I'm definitely using 100 Easy Lessons with my youngest.

Would she be beyond Bob's Books? You can get those in different levels. Another thing that was good for us that you might want to check out are the I can Read God's Word series by Phil Smouse. You can get several different books or there is one big book that has a few of them combined. All are reading level one and excellent. Also might want to look at Phonics Readers: Grade K by Florence M. Lindstrom, these are more phonics based and they are good. They have a little phonics reminder next to the story. They say K level but to me they go beyond that. It would definitely be in between emerging reader level I would think. Or any of the I Can Read Books level 1 would be good also.

If I think of more I will post them. These are all things though that I have used myself. HTH

i don't know if i posted this link right but someone else asked if Emerging readers was too early for a 1st grader and this was my response. it was basically what you are saying in your post and it is working well for us.

Funnix 2 is actually designed to go after 100 easy lessons. I used this with my dd's, as they weren't quite ready for other readers yet.

Otherwise, I'd just go ahead with the emerging readers.

i just looked up the Funnix 2 . It is expensive. personally i try to stay away from too much computer instruction, especially if i have to be there too. i would rather sit with a book with my child and other stuff not involving computer. i am glad that we are just reading books at a level a little below emerging Readers until my son is ready for it.

Just my 2 cents. it may work great for others. for sure the price doesn't work for us.

Thanks all! I didn't realize that there was red and green early readers I can get Bob Books from the library so we will work on those and whatever else I can come up with.

We will do Beyond next year for 1 & 2nd grade so i would like to save the Beyond Emerging Readers for 1st grade.

My son is finishing 100 Easy Lessons this week. In the back of the 100 EL book there are 20 books suggested to be used once your child finishes the book. Most can be found in your local library. I'm also having my son work through Phonics Pathways. It's a great book to continue teaching Phonics rules for the remainder of this school year.

It's fun to see your child's reading level when they work through this book, isn't it! My son is reading everything now...I'm also amazed at how well he spells though we haven't even worked on spelling and won't until the next HOD guide.
