DITHOR read aloud suggested
I am wondering if the suggestion in DITHOR to do a read aloud in each genre-- is that suggestion mainly for people not using the full HOD system- and therefore not doing storytime? Is our storytime basically the same? or is it suggested to do another book outloud on top of storytime? I am thinking reading 3 say biographies simultaneously might get confusing for the kids? (he did this- no that was the so and so in our other book...) Then again I am a 1 book at a time kind of person.
Also, I have my younger dd starting off with Emerging Readers, my oldest I am having start DITHOR probably level 3. Is it worth adding an additional read aloud (if it is an additional)- since I don't have multiple students to do the DITHOR project (or could my emerging reader do the project if she listens to the read aloud even though she is doing emerging reading?)
Do you do the suggested read aloud for DITHOR?

Re: DITHOR read aloud suggested
Thanks for your post, I was beginning to have very similar thoughts. I watch our ds read more than one book at a time on his own just for enjoyment and he seems to keep them separated ( I think ). Sorry I don't have any suggestions but I am anxious to hear others' advice.

I believe that the Storytime books are for you as the teacher, to read to them. DITHOR is a reading program for the kids to read to you, and you can do both together. Some do Storytime at lunch when all the kids are at the table and able to listen quietly. Some do it at bedtime when daddy is home and can participate, etc. From my understanding, DITHOR is mostly done about 3 times a week, or different if you choose. So, it's really up to you. But, they are usually both done. I know there are others that can give some more helpful information.

Just to make sure my questions is clear (I am often unclear)-- I am referring to the additional reading selection recommended in DITHOR. I realize my dd will read at least 1 book from each genre (or 2 or 3 based which pace we select)-- but there is also a recommendation- thought it said to read aloud a book in each genre (I assumed that meant teacher read aloud) -- I am asking about this suggested additional book-- is it suggested for those not doing HOD with storytime -- or is it suggested in addition to HOD storytime (and in addition to the selections made for the student to read in DITHOR)

Hmmm, I'm sorry Brenda, I'm not sure about that one. I'm sure that there are some other moms that can help you though.

Re: DITHOR read aloud suggested
Hi Brenda! Sorry, I am not remembering where it said that in DITHOR, but the extra book suggested would be for those ladies NOT doing HOD's complete guides; in other words, ladies only using DITHOR and no other HOD guide would want to add a genre read aloud. The Storytime in the Core programs of the other HOD guides would fill that need already, so no extra book would need to be added unless you wanted to. Hope I made sense there!simplepamom wrote:Just to make sure my questions is clear (I am often unclear)-- I am referring to the additional reading selection recommended in DITHOR. Julie,
Thank you, yes that answers my question. It is mentioned in like step 5 or something of getting started I think. Regardless, as I was looking over my book selections, and what I needed to do for DITHOR, I saw it, and thought it was probably for those not using the HOD guides, but wanted to verify.

Re: DITHOR read aloud suggested
I spoke with Carrie, and she'd mentioned that the only time a read aloud is suggested in DITHOR is once and awhile for the Group Project option, since it would be beneficial for some of the group projects if all of the dc were familiar with the same book. There are 2 other options for projects that can be chosen instead, on the occasion that the extra book is suggested for the group project.
