Geography in HOD

Post by Dorla » Fri Jun 19, 2009 8:14 am

Thanks Carrie and Julie for incorporating Geography in such a gentle interesting way (Beyond). My son LOVES geography and anything that has to do with maps and I see that he is going to really enjoy Bigger!
By the way, he thoroughly enjoyed The Santa Fe and Oregon trail - since he studies maps SO MUCH - when we learned about these trails he was very interested to learn that there were no cities or roads before!
We are off to study the Transcontinental Railroad...Wow! This currilculum is "Beyond" anyone's expectations! :D
Thanks again,
Dorla

Thanks, Dorla! :D We have enjoyed the geography as well. My dc seem to remember it well because it is linked to what we've learned in history in a way that is relevant to what we just read. Carrie and I have talked about geography at length, and decided it was important to have it come to "life" as much as possible rather than be a bunch of unrelated facts taught to be memorized (as that had been our experience in school as students, and we didn't retain what we'd aced on the tests :? ). Hence, the linking the geography to the living history books being read. So, thank you for taking the time to share you've enjoyed the geography! :D

Dorla,

My boys have really learned so much geography through their HOD studies too that I know I probably learned (and didn't retain) along the way in my multiple years of schooling! :D

After years spent in the public school setting teaching geography as a separate subject for the purpose of learning "map skills" and memorizing geography facts that meant little to my students and didn't transfer to much else, we've thoroughly enjoyed having the geography linked to history (as geography influences history so much)! :D

I can honestly say that I am enjoying geography for the first time in my life! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
