Choosing Package Extras for Multiple Ages

Post by daisytownmom » Wed May 06, 2009 2:17 pm

Hi-

I'm new to the message board and am in the process of deciding about my first purchase with HOD. I have 2 boys, ages 10 & 7. I believe that BHFHG is the best choice to include both boys for my up-in-coming year.

My question has to do with choosing the readers. My 7 yr old is definitely an "emerging reader," while my 10 will fit well with DITHOR. However, I'm unsure about the Delux and Extension packages.

Am I correct in assuming that the Delux package is read-alouds for ALL ages?

Does the Extension Package serve to "take the place of" the history and science readers if you have an older child?

And if you do not purchase the Extension Package, is there a list of appropriate books in BHFHG so that they could be obtained from the local library, as with DITHOR?

I really feel the Lord is leading me to this curriculum, not only for my children-but for my own spiritual walk. I need to be wise (financially) with my purchase, but I'm afraid I will leave a valuable piece out of the package if I'm not clear on where the readers fit.

Thanks in advance for the direction!

Welcome and you are going to love HOD!!!
The Deluxe package is the read-alouds for everyone.
The extension package is for the older to read independently in addition to the rest.
If you do not purchase the extension package, you might find some at the library. You will not likely find the John Tiner science text or the History Text, but some of the literature you might. You could check online ahead of time and only order what they don't have, or order them as needed over the year from amazon or Barnes and Noble (you get 25% off there as an educator!- Call ahead to see what you need to bring to prove your homeschooler status).

You have more freedom with the DITHOR books since you can use any book from that genre that is the right reading level. I love Carrie's book choices though, and if you can't purchase them, I'd try to find her choices at the library! My kids have LOVED them! But if you already have great books on your shelf, by all means use those!

Will you be using the "emerging reader" set with your youngest as well? You'll need those if he's an emerging reader, so you might want to see what the library has of those as well unless you plan to purchase them.
