LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
Hi there! I think I will go with Little Hearts... for my dd (5 yo) in the Fall, and choose all 1st grade level choices. In reading these threads it seems as though in order to get ALL the instructions for 1st grade choices (including hands on math) you would also need the Teacher's Guide from Beyond. Is that correct?
So, the following year when she is in Beyond and I am choosing 2nd grade choices in Math etc. I would then also need the Bigger... Teacher's Guide to get all the instructions for using 2nd grade choices with Beyond. Is that correct? Are we always going to be one TG behind then?
The same question goes for my ds too. He'll be beginning Preparing... and be using the 4th grade choices. Are we going to also need the TG for the level up?
Can someone please explain the details for me? Thanks so much!

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
You are correct for the Math in LHFHG. The activities listed are for the Earlybird Series. LHFHG does have the basic written schedule for Signapore 1A and 1B in the appendix then Beyond has Singapore 1A and 1B for the scheduled activities.

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
Hi Michelle!
You are going to really enjoy LHFHG! LHFHG gives a first grade option for Science, Math, and Thinking Skills and handwriting. A schedule is included, for each of these in the LHGHG manual. In Beyond, you will be able to choose a first grade or second grade list for spelling and math. Beyond actually uses a "second grade" science book, as well. You also have the option of doing more writing of poems or you could do A Reason for Handwriting A, for first grade.
I will be putting my 5.5 year old in Beyond this fall. We are going very slowly though.... 4 days a week, because I don't want it to overwhelm her. We will be doing all the options included in the Beyond manual, but doing the A Reason For Handwriting A so she has a bit more practice on her writing skills.

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
Hi Michelle!
You're right about the math. To use the hands-on activities that Carrie has written for 1A and 1B, you'll need the Beyond manual. The following year, you would need the Bigger manual for the activities to go with 2A and 2B. Your "problem" will stop there though because 2B is the last level that has hands-on activites written for it. Bigger has a schedule for Singapore 3A and 3B which uses the textbook and workbook. I'd really encourage you to use the hands-on activities if you can afford to get the manual, because they're great! (And fun! ) If you think about it you'll be spending money on something you're most likely going to purcahse the next year anyway. To purchase the math workbooks and the Beyond guide, it'll cost you $61.35 (which is less than many other math programs I've looked at). But, $44 of that is your teacher's guide for the next year of school! If you don't get the Beyond guide, you'll have to purchase the textbooks for 1A and 1B from Singapore...and I just don't think they'll be nearly as fun as Carrie's activites.
You'll be a-ok with Preparing as it has the Singapore 4A and 4B schedule.

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
So......that gives me another question. If you use HOD guides for Singapore math 1A,1B,2A,2B, do you also need to buy the Singapore textbook? Because in the HOD catalog it lists $36.00 for textbook and workbooks for those math levels as if you needed the textbook too, in addition to the HOD teacher's guide.
In short, when using HOD, what math levels require using the Singapore textbook in addition to the HOD teacher's guide?
Thanks!

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
Michelle,
You start using the Singapore textbooks when they reach 3A! Up until then the TM (LHFHG, BLHFHG, & BHFHG) all contain activities for Singapore Earlybird Math - Singapore 2B and you use the workbooks.

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
I'll be doing the same as you are for my son next year. You won't need the textbooks, but will need the Beyond teacher's guide. Maybe we can stay in touch to see how it is going. i was concerned about working from seperate books but Kathleen posted a great idea...I'll see if I can't find it and post a link. A simple run-down is she puts post-it tabs in the books where she is at and gets a canvas box (Target I think) and puts all of her current books in this and makes it all right there and ready to go. We are getting ready to move in June and will be transitioning to a house MUCH SMALLER than where we are now. We will be there hopefully for only a couple of months while we wait to see if dh will go back on active duty and where we will move next. I like to have everything close.
I''m getting ready to order this week and can't wait. We just might start school this summer so we are a little ahead when "the move" starts.
Blessings

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
Hi Michelle! You've gotten some great answers already here, and I'm so glad you've made a plan you can get excited about with your dd! As far as the math goes, the reason the 4 books (1A Textbook/Workbook and 1B Textbook/Workbook) are listed as needed for the first grade option for LHFHG is in case moms don't purchase the BLHFHG manual for the math instruction. The teacher part of math instruction can be covered either way - by using the textbooks OR by using the HOD math plans in BLHFHG. I preferred using the hands-on math in Beyond myself, and I figured I might as well buy the Beyond manual and put money toward that since I'd be using it the next year anyway, than put the money toward 2 math textbooks. But, either way will work! (I also wanted the Beyond manual on hand because I could tell my ds was going to get to the Emerging Reader's Set before finishing LHFHG, which is another great plus to having the Beyond manual on hand - you can start the Emerging Reader's Set earlier if you need to. )Michelle wrote:So......that gives me another question. I hope Kirstin can find Kathleen's post (only if you get the chance though Kirstin ) - Kathleen has wonderful organizational ideas. It helps me to have 2 tubs (for each child since I'm doing 2 programs). One of each child's tubs has the books we are using right now, and the other tub has the books we'll get to later in the plans. I just sub out books as we finish them for the next book that way. This works great especially for things like the Storytime titles, that you only need one of them each month. I put a couple of sticky notes in the guides too, and that has worked out great for quickly finding our place. HTH!

Julie

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
Julie this now brings a new question from me:
I have been following this thread very closely because this is exactly what I will be doing for my daughter this fall:
LHFHG with the 1st grade options.
I understand that if you want the math hands on activities for 1st grade you need to use the Beyond guide.
Is it the same for the two other 1st grade options for Fine motor skills & Science as well? I noticed LHFHG has the schedule for Do it carefully for Fine Motor Skills and The World God Made for Science. Will BLHFHG have the other schedule for Thinking skills and Our Father's World that we should follow just like math?
I appreciate the help, I know that you have probably had this question a million times but I am SO excited to get started, I want to make sure I get the most out of this curriculum as I can. Also I just know HOD will bless our family so much, what a wonderful blessing to have found this!!!
Thanks!!

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
That's great you are excited - you will have a wonderful time going through LHFHG! In answer to your question, the plans for both the Kindergarten and the First Grade Science and both the Kindergarten and First Grade Fine Motor Skills are in the LHFHG plans. All of the Fine Motor Skills options are right in the 2 page spread daily plans, and the Science Activities are in the daily science box, but the schedule for daily readings from the first grade science option is in the LHFHG Appendix.CortezClan wrote:Julie this now brings a new question from me:

It is only the hands-on math activities for first grade that are not in the LHFHG manual. There is, however, a schedule for using the first grade math textbooks and workbooks in the appendix of LHFHG. So, you truly can just use LHFHG as a first grade option without getting the BLHFHG teacher's guide, you'd just need to purchase the 1A/1B Math Textbooks for your teaching part (along with the 1A/1B Workbooks). Many moms (me included) have just loved the HOD hands-on math plans so much, that they've gotten the Beyond Manual to have them. Did this answer your questions? If not, please ask some more!
In Christ,
Julie

Yes this answers my question perfectly! Thanks so much! I am planning on buying the Beyond guide I was just wondering how much switching between manuals I will have to do. ALL my questions so far have been answered by this wonderful board and so much wisdom is here that I have been blessed so much!
Thanks again and have a wonderful week!

Re: LHFHG question about what's in the Teacher's Guide
I'm going to have to add in another question too now!
I've put almost everything in my "cart" and I put in the LHFHG Basic Package. In that, does it include the math textbook or just the dc workbooks? I will be buying the Beyond... teachers guide so I will not need the textbook, just the workbooks. Should I then not choose the Basic Package and order each item in that package separately?
I sure hope you can understand my question!
Thanks, Michelle

Michelle and Heather - Yes, you are right! The First Grade Basic Package option for LHFHG included all 4 Singapore math books (1A/1B Textbooks and Workbooks). So, with what you wanting to do, when you are ordering the items that are part of the basic package, you would want to individually select...Michelle wrote:I'm going to have to add in another question too now!
